Game seven, bottom of the ninth, two outs, bases loaded, and down by three. His back foot kicks up dirt as he settles into the batter’s box for the sixth time this at-bat. After taking a ball that was just a bit outside, the count is full.

The crowd is going wild as they chant his name, willing him to take them to glory. But when the pitcher nods and straightens after shaking off two signals from his catcher, a hush falls onto the fan.

His grip on the bat tightens and loosens in a familiar rhythm while staring down his opponent. The corner of his mouth curls into a grin as he winks towards the mount.

The pitcher winds up…

“Jason! Lunch!”

“A’right! Coming!”

The stick is dropped on the soft backyard lawn. Maybe after lunch it will become the sword of the princess-saving knight.

About the Creator

Jean-François Lamothe

I mainly write fiction in the fantasy and its neighbouring genres. I love writing stories that are not of this world. I want my writing to be an escape. I enjoy writing short stories, but also hope to write longer works in the future.
