Bloom

Short Story

By W.E. CervantezPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Isabel was a proud Chicana woman, living in a small town in the desert. She loved to read and spent most of her days in the local library. One day, while browsing the shelves, she came across a beautifully illustrated book of poetry. The cover was adorned with a beautiful red rose, and the title read, "Bloom Where You Are Planted."

As she flipped through the pages, she noticed that each page was adorned with small drawings of roses and beautiful, poetic prose. It was as if the book had been written just for her.

Isabel checked out the book and took it home, excited to read it from cover to cover. As she settled in for the evening, she noticed that one of the pages was dog-eared, and a small rose petal was tucked into the crease. She gently unfolded the petal and took a deep breath, savoring its sweet fragrance.

The next day, Isabel returned to the library to return the book and check out another. But when she arrived, she was met with an unexpected surprise. The library had been closed due to a burst pipe, and all of the books had been damaged by water.

Isabel was devastated. She had promised to take care of the book and had failed. She returned home, unsure of what to do. As she sat down at her desk to write a letter of apology to the librarian, she noticed that the rose petal was still in her pocket. She took it out and placed it on her desk, feeling a sense of comfort in its presence.

Over the next few days, Isabel couldn't shake the feeling that the rose petal was trying to tell her something. She started to research the meaning of roses and found that they often symbolized new beginnings and hope.

Inspired by this newfound knowledge, Isabel decided to start her own garden. She spent hours every day tending to her plants, carefully planting each seed and nurturing them as they grew. And as she worked, she felt a sense of peace and purpose that she had never felt before.

Months went by, and Isabel's garden flourished. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of roses, and the colors were so vibrant that they seemed to glow in the desert sun. It was as if her garden was a reflection of her soul, full of beauty and life.

One day, as Isabel was sitting in her garden, she noticed a young girl walking down the street. The girl looked lost, and Isabel could tell that she was in need of a friend. She invited the girl into her garden and showed her around, explaining the meaning of each flower and plant.

As they walked, Isabel noticed that the girl kept looking at the rose petal that she had tucked into her pocket. "That's a beautiful rose petal," the girl said. "It's from a book that I borrowed from the library," Isabel explained. "It was damaged, so I had to return it, but I kept this petal as a reminder."

The girl's eyes lit up. "I remember that book," she said. "It was my favorite. I used to borrow it all the time." Isabel smiled, realizing that everything had come full circle. "Would you like to borrow it again?" she asked, holding out the petal.

The girl's face lit up, and she eagerly took the petal from Isabel's hand. "Thank you," she said. "This is a sign. I think I'm supposed to read that book again."

As Isabel watched the girl walk away, she realized that the rose petal had been a gift all along. It had led her to her garden, and now it had led the girl back to the book that had touched her heart so deeply. It was a symbol of hope.
