Her eyes shut as her fingers attempted to press the ‘power’ button. The TV kept talking as though knowing her first batch of sleep would be on a couch.
“Do you feel worthy?” the man on the TV asked.
“Yes,” Evelyn mumbled in habit.
“Do you feel worthy?”
“Yes.”
“Worthy?”
“Yes.”
She had drifted off moments after that, even humming to lull herself to sleep. When she awoke however, her vision was suddenly sharper without her glasses and she could swear that her son, Tyler was playing a morning prank on his twin brother, Jacob. How could she know that however if she was downstairs from their bedroom?
As Evelyn rubbed her forehead, she suddenly realized that one moment she was in the bathroom washing up and the next moment, she told her boys to do the same before having their breakfast, which she prepared in…ten seconds?
“Whoa, what is happening?” Evelyn asked with a heaved breath.
“You answered our call,” a deep voice answered.
Evelyn screeched and turned toward the kitchen entrance. A tall, dark-haired man stood there, holding his hands up. “I mean you no harm. I was sent here because we have not seen superpowers like yours.”
“Excuse me?” she asked, ready to grab a knife.
“Superpowers. Extreme intuition, multitasking, healing, perseverance…” He paused, looking at her more intently. “…self-sacrifice. These our abilities that are not simple to come by.”
Evelyn scrunched her eyebrows. “How are those…superpowers?”
“I’m certain your sons would explain when they’re older.”
She swallowed. “Who…are you?”
“We are Benevolence.” He bowed his head. “We’re a team with gifted attributes who provides protection for those in need. And you’re like no other.” He stepped forward. “Will you join us?”
What a question. What a way to discover that she had any gift whatsoever.
