Within the epitaph, scrawled deep into the very fabric and mold of the Wellspring, lies one very substantial truth: " think this not a prison or hold, neither grave nor oubliette, but a sword and shield against the unfathomable terror of the universe.

-The man who sees the Kings"

Entry into The black diary of D.C Houston

" This city has always smelt like piss and bubblegum." James thought to himself as his face slapped hard against the greasy, wet pavement. He had realized it was quite an odd thing to think given his current situation.

James had found himself wandering the alley between The Hound & Lance Pub, and a 12 story apartment complex currently under renovations, late at night, drunk, and in no mood for social interaction. He had just finished a 17 hour shift at the precinct dealing with an arson case in which 14 people were killed in a department store, the safe was gutted, and the entire women's lingerie section was burnt to a crisp. Needless to say he had needed a stiff drink or two.

As he dusted himself off and straightened his shirt, struggling to to regain his balance after an unfortunate and unexpected meeting with the concrete, his phone began to ring. Glancing down at the ringing square glass device in his hand, James could not make out who it was that was calling him so damn late.

Lifting the thin, cold glass square to his ear, James could make out a deep, velvety voice echo into his ear, " get back to the precinct immediately. We have a breaking case, it's all hands in deck for this one."

" Sargent?" James drunkenly slurred.

" Gods dammit White! Sober the fuck up, grab some coffee and get your ass down here pronto! Dr. Takinama was found dead in his office!" shouted the Sargent as he quickly disconnected the call.

James felt a cold, sobering feeling rush through his body. If there was ever a time for him to get his shit together it was now. Dr. Yoshi Takinama was a big name in Avalon. He was the founder of the Takinama institute, and creator of the free energy machines that powered Avalon city. Needless to say, this was going to be a tough loss for everyone.

"Shit." James thought as he clicked off his phone. " this was not the call I was wanting right now."

gathering his thoughts James straightened himself, dusted off the small remnants of pebble and rock that remained stuck to his dark, mahogany skin and began walking with a purpose.

" Coffee! I need coffee." James slurred.

July 17,

The blackness of the void that is the Wellspring engulfs and consumes me. The silence is deafening. There is an onyx sea of nothingness. What lies beyond this definition of emptiness?

If there is no other truths, let this be one: what is man if not more than metal and stone? More than an inky black ochre inhabiting an empty space? Logic, my friends, is the only speaker of universal truth. Logic dictates that there is more that lies beyond our understanding. More that lies beyond our small pocketed prison in a toothless corner of the infinite.

- Professor D.C Houston

" There is no substance, no drink or drug that can keep our minds numb to the truth that lies just outside the walls of the wellspring. The glorious horrors of the infinite, the blind ones who swim about their cradle passing judgement upon all who live here. Their colors speak to me, call me to them. We are many, they are few. - the man who sees the Kings"
