Chapter Two: Are You Going To Be My Guy?

"Aren't we supposed to be watching our guy?" I asked.

The condensation from my large Chocolate Frappe left a pool of water on the glass table as the heat from the unforgiving sun melted my skin and the ice in my drink.

The local news predicted the temperature to skyrocket to 50℃. Unusually hot for March which meant that Satan had to come to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and said, "Enough with this cold shoulder. Here's my burning love for you instead."

Although everyone was thankful to finally see the blue skies and see the snow evaporate into a terrible nightmare, the sudden violent heat had everyone cursing at the sun.

Sorath, the Guardian Angel of Hunter, decided that we should go out for coffee and get to know each other. After all, we would be working side by side to cause more existential crises for our human.

I was hesitant at first but I could only watch Hunter stare at his computer and do research for so long. I was hoping to have something similar to the dramatized scientists on TV, but the reality wasn't that. So, I thought, why not take Sorath's offer for now?

I unbuttoned my blouse and desperately fanned myself with my hand. The white fabric was drenched with sweat and it exposed everything underneath. Thankfully, I had an extra elastic around my wrist and I made great use of it by haphazardly throwing my long dark hair up.

Who would have thought that the Underworld had a better climate than Earth? And why do lower demons like me get to feel like humans do?

I felt scammed.

It didn't help that Sorath was examining every inch of my skin. I tried to avoid eye contact because even if my confidence could put Lucifer's pride to shame, the intensity of his stare had me feeling things.

And those things would be a delightful distraction to my goals...which I could not afford.

After convincing myself that the redness on my cheeks and skin was due to sunburn, I continued serving him attitude on a shiny silver platter. "Are you just going to undress me with your eyes or are you going to speak?"

"Hm..." He leaned in and flashed a smile. A smile that would have me on my knees so I could confess all my wrongdoings even when I did not remember what they were.

His eyes lit with amusement as if he could hear all the chaos in my head.

And I hated him for it. Despise was more like it.

"Hunter will live," he said. "After all, I have watched over him for a very long time now."

I ground my teeth and tried to keep my cool. I loathed how melodic his voice sounded to my ears.

This was what angels sound like?

It frightened me to know how much power he had. Even if I knew he was not using Compulsion at that time, his voice could seduce any mortal to do whatever he wanted.

I admitted that I was crushing on him, but knowing that my opposition was probably more powerful than I was, professionally concerned me.

"Define 'very long time,'" I prodded and took a sip from my drink.

"This is not Hunter's first life," he answered as if that was enough to explain everything. "What is interesting though, after countless lifetimes, is that I never had a colleague until now."

Brushing a stray hair away from my eyes, he whispered, "especially a beauty like you that would put that jealous little Aphrodite into shame."

Instinctively, I slapped his hand away and sent a silent apology to Aphrodite. Even though I was a demon and beyond her jurisdiction, I was not going to risk her rage.

"Aren't angels supposed to be modest?" I snapped. "Last time I checked, they are immune to lust."

"Depends on what kind, dear." He chuckled as his eyes darkened. "Why do you think I am here on Earth and punished to watch over a puny little human for an indefinite time?"

I pressed my lips together as I brushed off the uneasiness inside me. Despite Sorath's angelic features - his golden hair that reflected light, his sun-kissed skin, gray stormy eyes, and chiselled jawline, there was darkness inside him that was screaming to be unleashed.

The only time I felt such a presence was when I accidentally bumped into Lucifer, and that experience was enough to leave a mark on me for eternity.

Using my silence as his cue to continue, he spoke lowly, "I do not care what you do. Seduce the human, f*ck him, let him succumb to darkness - hell, even kill him! I actually am quite interested in what you could do. However, it may be in your best interest to not get in the way of my goals."

His fingers lightly brushed the edge of the table as he walked toward me. I stayed still and quiet, afraid that my tongue would betray me and expose the fear and curiosity building inside me.

His face just stopped inches away from mine, and his cold breath smelled like the spearmint chocolate he just consumed. "Anyway, I am looking forward to working with you, little demon."

His lips softly brushed mine and before my mind could process what just happened, he was already gone.

"Ma'am." The voice of the server snapped me out of my daze and I immediately straightened my shoulders.

"Yes?" I crooned.

The server averted her gaze as her cheeks turned crimson. It was satisfying to finally have some control again. Sorath had certainly gutted my pride.

"Uhm," she stuttered. "Would you be paying for everything?"

I raised my brow and she stepped back. I took a deep breath to cool my temper and handed her a "black credit card" that was given to me before coming to Earth.

It had no known limit since the funds were drawn from the Underworld itself. However, what irritated me was that I got duped into paying.

Yes, it was a meagre $20 but I couldn't believe that a**hole got me.

Some angel he is, I thought.

My phone dinged, and I opened a message from an unknown number.

Ah speaking of the devil. I sighed as I read the message:

As payment for ditching you, Hunter is now hiring a personal assistant.

You're welcome.

It may be in your interest to "apply." After all, getting close to him would make your job a lot easier.

I heard from dear old Luci that you want to be a Duchess...not an impossible task for someone like you.

- Sorath

P.S. Dinner is on me tonight. Do you enjoy sushi?

P.P.S. Black lace looks nice on you.

The glass storefront behind me cracked, startling the guests of the cafe. Low murmurs and nervous laughter erupted, so as soon as the server handed my card back, I slipped out.

Once I was sure that I was alone, I waved my hand to open a portal back to the little condo that I was "renting."

I hate him, I hate him, I hate him! I thought. However, the little smile on my lips while I undressed betrayed me. Maybe if I played my cards right, this job would not be terribly boring.

"It may be in your best interest to not get in the way of my goals."

"Then he better not get in my way then." I sang as I washed off the sweat. Might as well look presentable for this fake job that I would be applying for.
