Analyzing Superfood Claims
Hearing all about the Goji Berry
Among them, goji berries called a “superfood” or “miracle fruit” have been considered to cure many diseases. Despite being very healthy, it’s important to cut through the hype and distinguish between what’s true about these products.
It has been noted that goji berries should be eaten as they are enriched with antioxidants, vitamins A and C, and fiber. They boost the function of the immune system, enhance the health of the skin plus have antioxidant qualities possibly shielding the body against oxidative stress. Nevertheless, giving them such a name as a ‘miracle’ fruit may be rather misleading. Desolate, goji berries are effective in treating or preventing any disease and the importance of a balanced diet has already been emphasized.
There are numerous reports on the Internet that goji berries cure everything from diabetes to cancer, even though the evidence is scanty. They can have side effects like weight loss, better vision or a better immune system, but there is no concrete proof to support any of these claims. In fact, a diet with all different types of fruits, vegetables, and foods can offer the best of the nutritional benefits and even more so than any of the milk concoctions.
One has to be careful with the so-called ‘superfoods’. It is therefore important to clearly understand that goji berries are healthy berries but in no way can replace a well-balanced diet, healthy living, or required medical treatment. They should be added to a customer’s diet because they may provide certain benefits but expecting them to be magical is wrong.
Therefore, we get it that goji berries are healthy but they are not as magical as the media would have as portrayed. It is only hard work, a proper diet, and timely checkups from a physician that can work wonders for one’s health.
