An Embarrassing 18th Birthday
Everybody's worst nightmare is being poisoned by someone they are close to and not knowing it. Two sisters show us that you never know when someone really has it out for you even if it's not with poison.
Rowyn Bailey was the youngest sibling of two. She had an older sister named Sage who was always the perfect child. Rowyn was expected to follow in her sister's footsteps, but she just wanted to be herself. The sudden pattering of the rain hitting the window interrupted Rowyn's thoughts as she sat in her bedroom by the window just watching the rain. It reminded her of that night.
The girls were young. Sage had just turned thirteen and Rowyn was eleven. The rain was coming down so hard it sounded like rocks pounding down on the roof of the house. The girls were playing a game quietly while their parents slept soundly in the next room. They were playing house where Sage was the mommy and Rowyn was the daughter, but it quickly turned stale when Sage got a wild hair for some drama.
"Daughter," Sage exclaimed, "I don't like how you're behaving! You must go outside and sit on the porch to think about what you've done!"
Rowyn thought it was a weird twist to the game, but she followed anyway because she loved and trusted her older sister.
"You may come back in when you learn to behave," Sage scolded her little sister while gently pushing her outside and shutting the door. She twisted the lock to keep Rowyn outside and went back to their shared bedroom.
The covered porch was the only thing keeping Rowyn from getting soaked, but the wind didn't spare her at all. The wind carried water under and splashed Rowyn's body. She started to shiver in her red t-shirt and her gray pajama pants.
"Sage? Can I come back in now, please? I'm cold," she called for her sister. It was silent in response. The only sound was the sound of the wind and rain. Rowyn's brown hair was now damp with rainwater and her clothes had wet specks everywhere from the rain blowing in.
"Sage," she called again. The panic started setting in as her sister didn't respond. Rowyn's eyes started to fill with water as she hugged her body in an attempt to stay warm.
"Sage, please! I'm so cold," she cried.
No response ever came and poor Rowyn started to think she was stuck outside for good. Tears were rolling down her face as she sat down against the front door and pulled her knees close to her body. She continued to cry until she fell asleep.
A few hours went by before Rowyn woke up to her panicking mother.
"Rowyn! How did you get out here," she asked with a sigh of relief from seeing her daughter.
"Sage did it, mommy. She wouldn't let me back in," Rowyn replied with new tears rolling down her cold, red cheeks.
"What? Sage is asleep, hunny. Let's just get you inside and in some dry clothes, okay?" Rowyn was shocked at her mother's response. She didn't think Rowyn was telling the truth.
Rowyn never once forgot that memory. It replayed in her head over and over again every time Sage was praised and complimented while she was drug through the dirt as the troubled child. Sage was seventeen now getting ready to turn eighteen the very next day and Rowyn was sixteen. Rowyn never let her sister see how much she hated her, but the hatred was definitely burning inside of her and eating her away.
The rain that was pattering on the window slowed to a sprinkle. Tomorrow was the big day, Sage's eighteenth birthday. Rowyn had been planning this day for two years now. She had read a book that involved a side character poisoning the main character and it sparked an idea.
Sage absolutely loved anything chocolate. Rowyn had told her parents to only worry about a cake for everyone else because she wanted to make a personal cake for her older sister's big day. The party didn't start until later in the evening, so Rowyn had plenty of time to make the cake.
It was getting late, so Rowyn decided it was time to lay down. She climbed into her bed and glanced at the other side of the room where her sister slept soundly. It didn't take long and Rowyn had joined her in sleep.
The next morning came quick. Sage was still sound asleep when Rowyn's alarm starting ringing at 11:45 am. She turned it off quickly as to not wake up her sister and headed to the kitchen to start baking the cake.
She gathered all the ingredients and started prepping them. She started mixing them together and stopped midway to pull a small box out of her pocket. It was a chocolate laxative. She poured the powder into the mix and started churning away. Once it was thoroughly mixed she poured the mix into a small cake pan and placed it into the oven.
Rowyn sat down at the kitchen island on a stool and started scrolling through her phone to pass the time while the cake was baking. Sage had all kinds of her friends coming over for her party and Rowyn couldn't wait to see the look on everyone's faces.
Once the cake was finished, Rowyn pulled it out and set it on the kitchen counter. She gave it time to cool while gathering up the icing to decorate it. She poured her chocolate icing into a piping bag and a white icing into another piping bag.
She started squeezing the chocolate icing around the edge of the cake and allowed it to overflow down the cake almost like it was melting. Once she liked how it looked she put the chocolate down and grabbed the white icing which had a smaller fine tip on it to write with. She wrote out the number 18 and added a smaller "th" after it.
Rowyn grabbed a container of chocolate sprinkles to add some more creative touches to the cake. She sprinkled them on top of the chocolate icing and placed some on the parts that drooped down the side of the cake.
She was impressed with her little cake. Rowyn grabbed the candle her family wanted her to use for the party and placed it right above the "18th" in the center of the cake. She had finally finished the cake and felt proud of the result.
Rowyn glanced over at the stove clock for the time. It was almost 1 o'clock. She picked up the cake and stored it away in the refrigerator until the party.
The time seemed to fly by as people started showing up. Eventually, the Bailey house was filled with teenage girls and boys to celebrate Sage's birthday. Rowyn couldn't wait for the moment her sister could dig into her cake.
Rowyn couldn't remember much of the party before it was time for cake. She was too excited to finally get the revenge she had always wanted on her sister. Everyone gathered around Sage while Rowyn ran to the kitchen to grab the cake. She placed the cake in front of Rowyn and lit the candle.
"Happy Birthday, sis! Make a good wish," Rowyn said with a wink.
Sage smiled at her sister before everyone joined together to sing her Happy Birthday. Once everyone ended the song Sage blew out her candle. Rowyn watched as her sister pulled the candle out of her cake and cut herself a slice of the already small cake.
Sage took her fork and started eating her piece while everyone else was cutting into the sheet cake for themselves.
"Sis, this is really good," Sage told her sister after swallowing a mouthful of chocolate cake.
"I'm glad you like it," Rowyn responded with a warm smile. She continued to watch her sister eat the cake filled with laxatives.
A few hours went by of the party. Everyone was busy playing games and socializing at this point. Suddenly Sage started groaning and grabbing at her aching stomach. Every head had turned to look at her at this point curious as to what was wrong with her.
"Oh man," Sage grumbled while jumping up as quickly as she could and rushing towards the bathroom. She made it halfway before you could hear the sound of what could have been Sage letting off gas or she had started having a bowel movement. Rowyn was trying hard not to laugh while noticing the looks people were giving her sister. Their faces were showing pure disgust.
Sage was in the bathroom for about twenty minutes before Rowyn walked over and knocked on the door.
"Hey, sis? You alright in there?" Rowyn asked trying to hide the fact she was trying not to have a laughing fit.
"No, can you go get mom?" Sage asked. Rowyn walked away and started to giggle before reaching their mother.
"Mom, Sage said she needs you. She's in the bathroom," Rowyn informed her mother.
As soon as her mom left the room Rowyn busted out laughing. She couldn't hold it back anymore. She had embarrassed her too-perfect sister in front of all of her friends and she had no way to prove Rowyn did it. For once Rowyn felt like she wasn't the laughing stock and the one everyone was looking down on at that moment. It was finally her sister's turn.
It didn't take long and all of her friends started piling out the door without even saying goodbye to their friend. They all left out of pure disgust. After all, their friend just had an explosive accident at her own birthday party.
