The Morning of Emptiness

Ethan woke up to the blaring sound of his alarm. It was a usual morning—or so he thought. Rubbing his eyes, he reached for his phone but found no notifications. No messages, no calls. It was odd, given how his work group chat usually buzzed nonstop.

Shrugging it off, he got out of bed and peered outside. The streets were eerily silent. No cars, no joggers, not even the usual cacophony of birds. Unease crept into him. Grabbing his jacket, Ethan stepped out onto the deserted street.

“Hello?” he called, his voice echoing in the still air. No response. He checked the nearby houses, rang doorbells, banged on doors. Each one was the same—empty.

The Search

Ethan ran to the local coffee shop. It was unlocked, as if someone had left in a hurry. Half-filled cups of coffee sat on tables, pastries remained untouched in glass displays, and the cash register was open, but no one was there.

He grabbed a phone from the counter and dialed the first number in the contacts list. The line connected, but all he heard was static.

Desperation mounting, Ethan sped through the town. The grocery store, the gas station, the park—everything was abandoned. Yet, it didn’t look like people had left; it felt as if they had simply vanished.

The Voice in the Dark

By evening, Ethan had made his way back home. The silence weighed on him, pressing against his chest. He turned on the TV, but every channel was static. Even the internet showed no signs of life—websites loaded, but no one had updated them.

As the hours dragged on, Ethan began to hear whispers. Faint and fleeting, they seemed to come from the edges of his mind.

“Who’s there?” he shouted into the empty house.

The whispers grew louder, forming incoherent words. Then, a single voice broke through the cacophony:

"You are not alone."

A World of Shadows

Ethan stumbled backward, his breathing ragged. Shadows began to creep along the walls, shapes forming and shifting. They didn’t look human; they were darker than any shadow he’d ever seen, and their movements were unnatural.

The voice returned, calm yet chilling: “You are the last.”

“Last of what? What happened to everyone else?” Ethan demanded.

There was no answer, only the oppressive silence. The shadows loomed closer, and Ethan felt a cold, hollow sensation in his chest.

A Shocking Truth

In a moment of clarity, Ethan realized he wasn’t in the world he knew anymore. The signs were all there—the static on the phone, the frozen time, the strange whispers. He wasn’t just alone; he was somewhere else entirely.

The voice whispered once more: “To bring them back, you must remember.”

“Remember what?” Ethan shouted, but the shadows swallowed his voice.

The world around him shimmered, and fragments of memories started to surface. An argument with his wife. A meeting with his boss. A hurried decision. And then—a blinding light.

It hit him all at once. The world he knew had vanished because of something he had done. The details were hazy, but the guilt was overwhelming.

The Choice

The voice grew louder: “Your time is running out. Do you wish to fix this, or remain here?”

“I want to fix it!” Ethan cried, tears streaming down his face.

The shadows began to recede, and a piercing light engulfed him. When he opened his eyes, he was back in his bed. The alarm blared, his phone buzzed with messages, and outside, the world was alive with activity.

Ethan sat up, his heart racing. He didn’t know if it had been a dream, a punishment, or something beyond his understanding. All he knew was that he had been given another chance—a chance to value the life and people he had almost lost.
