Gina watches Jessie leave, sagging against the window. She'd arrived only hours ago, duffel slung across her back. This time, Gina saw, she'd brought four pictures from the wall, still in their frames.

Gina bites her lip and swallows the urge to cry. She'll get to try again with Jessie. She's been coming to the shelter on and off for two years, never staying more than a weekend before going back to him. The injuries are getting worse. Jessie never calls the cops. Gina closes her eyes. Prays: just one more chance. She can do it.
