After Ever Happy’ Review!!
The dullest franchise in YA fiction continues its taffy pull of tedium with a stunningly perfunctory fourth instalment designed solely to plug the gap between films three and (sigh) five.

The English language has developed phrases like "blah blah blah" and "yada yada yada" to allow us to skip through dull, repetitive explanations in conversation. Unfortunately, no such shorthand exists in the "After" movie series. The fourth installment continues to follow the tired romance between Tessa and Hardin, the most uninteresting couple in YA fiction. The second and third movies were uneventful and the latest episode, "After Ever Happy," is no exception, building towards an eye-rolling "to be continued."
With the confusingly worded title "After Ever Happy," the movie picks up from the English wedding attended by Tessa and Hardin in the previous film. The story begins with Hardin finding out his mother Trish is having an affair with Christian, who is revealed to be Hardin's biological father. This leads Hardin to start the episode in a depressed state.
The movie goes on to depict the ups and downs in Tessa and Hardin's relationship but fails to bring anything new to the table. Instead, it retreads familiar territory and offers no real development for the characters. The plot is predictable and lacks the excitement and engagement that makes a movie truly worth watching.
The latest installment of the "After" series, "After Ever Happy", continues to perpetuate the confusing and frustrating casting changes. With multiple actors playing the same characters, it becomes difficult for viewers to keep up with the relationships and events in the story. The revolving door of cast members only adds to the already disorienting experience.
The film follows the tumultuous relationship of Tessa and Hardin, as they navigate their love and personal issues. Despite their rocky ups and downs, fans know that the on-off switch between them will continue to flip rapidly. Tessa is faced with a family crisis, but even this event does not bring any real development to their relationship.
The film's disjointed sense of time and place, likely due to the pandemic-era filming with Bulgaria standing in various locations, only adds to the confusion and lack of coherence. The lack of attention to detail and continuity detracts from the overall experience of the film.
The photography in the "After" film series by Rob Givens and Joshua Reis lacks sincerity and often appears odd. One instance is when the camera admires Tessa's body as though she underwent a major transformation, even though she looks unchanged except for her tights. The artificial sun flares during the two vanilla sex scenes further detract from the lack of chemistry between the leads, resulting in unerotic and unsatisfying scenes. Despite a devoted fanbase for the film, based on the Harry Styles-inspired YA book series by Anna Todd, the latest installment is formless and may receive a subzero rating on Rotten Tomatoes due to its declining aggregate scores.

"After Ever Happy" is a poorly executed movie that lacks substance and creativity. It serves as a mere filler between the third and fifth installment in the series and its 95-minute runtime is stretched thin with 15 minutes of significant events. Despite the themes of death, addiction, recovery, and relocation, they hold no weight as the main focus is Tessa and Hardin's breakup, which is expectedly resolved through a lackluster sex scene with excessive use of lens flare.
Compared to its predecessors, "50 Shades" and "Twilight," this movie is even more poorly written and fails to captivate the audience's attention. It is neither humorous nor engaging, but instead, suffocatingly dull. The conclusion is unsatisfying, offering only a weak tease that may only keep the most dedicated fans eager for the next installment. The next movie will arrive soon, but it's uncertain if it will be worth the wait.
In conclusion, "After Ever Happy" is a disappointing continuation of the "After" series. With confusing casting changes and a lack of a coherent story, the film fails to live up to the potential of the "After" universe.
