Remember when you pulled a rabbit from the hat in the form of a pregnancy test? Thought you tested positive for covid until I saw the words First response written in bold letters. My eyes sprung awake from a work-induced coma to meet the sparkle in yours. We were going to be the perfect parents.
Your entire existence, exemplary and thoughtful, flowed like a magical stream of endless love…
I’ve counted one hundred listless days since your untimely vanishing act caught me off-guard.
Bearing a child is not without potential complications. Our tiny miracle is a beautiful reminder of the enchanting person you were. She even has your eyes!
Losing you to Heaven is a comforting guarantee we will meet again...

Beating the system.
After things are said and done, my life will return to all I know — waking up, going to work, enjoying a lunch break, driving home, stopping for lottery tickets and beer on the way, showering, walking the dogs, playing with the dogs, making dinner, reading the news, watching jeopardy, consider doing laundry, deciding it's too much work, putting on headphones instead and drowning out the world with an edgy playlist of my favorite tracks that define a music era I never mentally left... (loses breath) A routine fit for King of the bachelors. More like The King of Misfortune.

My father told me what life was. You go to school. You get a job. You earn money. You retire. My father didn’t offer this as advice, no. He described it as routine, a set way of doing things that had worked before. Years of hardship, repetition, and caution shaped this path. There was no room for discussion. I never questioned it because that seemed pointless, even wasteful, and waste was not allowed in that system.

Beautifully written- unfortunately the US has one of the highest mortality rates for women giving birth among developed nations- in some years the highest rate. Scrolling down, I was so glad to see this was not your personal experience, it is heartbreaking.
