A winter's night in Kansas
my first fictional short story
On a cold winter's night, we are introduced to a teenage boy. He stands over 6'0, medium dark hair, fair skin, a strong chin, and very broad shoulders. He's wearing a his faded jeans, an old flannel coat, eye glasses, and a pair of brown cowboy boots. He's standing in the doorway of this old red barn his father build by hand many years ago. For years he has come out here night after night, just to ponder his place in the world. Looking to the stars for answers, but feeling pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Tens of thousands of light years of open space, countless planets both discovered and undiscovered, and quite possibly life beyond the stars outside of Earth. "Who am I?" he mutters to himself.
Football in hand, he starts to toss it back and forth from hand to hand. Thinking of the days he and his father would play catch in front of the corn fields, lightly smiling to himself. Then we follow him as he turns around walking into the barn; past some old farming equipment, some of which are under tarps. There is one very large black tarp covered in years of dust, but we are unsure what is under the tarp. It is fairly large, and is oddly shaped like an egg.
We then make our way over to the workbench in the back of the barn, he pulls down on the cord to turn on the light. There are multiple pictures of him along side his mother and father. Both the mother and father look immensely happy and proud along side their son over the years. We see pictures from his first teeth; first steps, his first day of school, various birthdays, various awards at school the whole nine yard. The last picture we see is the most recent, at the homecoming football game his Freshman year. He scans the photos still happy, yet there's a sprinkle of sadness and self doubt in his eyes.
Then as a horse neighs fairly loudly in the background, he makes his way over to the horse petting her. "Hey there old girl, how are you holding up? You doing okay?" He asks. He begins to reminisce about the first time he was taught how to ride a horse from his dad Johnathan. Eternally grateful of the life he was gifted, however he still feels like he was made for more. "Don't get me wrong, I love my life and I wouldn't dare ask for more. Ma and Pa did a fantastic job. But I know I'm different from everyone else. You know, you've seen what I'm capable of. And because of that; one day Kara, I'll find my purpose on this Earth. I haven't told Ma and Pa this so keep this between us. When I graduate I plan to head some where I can really make a difference helping people. I don't know where, but I know in my heart when I find it, I'll know it's where I belong." he proclaims. He then leans his head forward to lean his forehead against Kara's forehead.
From the old house in the distance we hear "Clark, time for dinner honey!". Clark shouts back "I'm coming Ma!". Then as we follow Clark back to the main house. The house is fully lit, with his Mother and Father setting up the kitchen table. A dog can be seen also getting ready for dinner. Clark gives us one last smile. Then; the last image we see is a faded blue mailbox with the name "Kent", painted on the side in red paint. Then in much smaller letters we see the mailbox signed with the initials: "J.K, M.K and C.K".
Thank you for your time, I hope you enjoyed what you have read today. As mentioned above this is my very first attempt at writing fiction. So please do not judge me too harshly. I'm trying my best. I have plenty of different articles on many different topics. Feel free to give those other articles a read or two. Also if you would be so kind, I'd greatly appreciate a heart, and then if you really feel so inclined tips are always appreciated but by no means required. Once again thank you very much for your time today.
