I absolutely love this time of the year. Today is October 31st, Halloween. Over 20 years ago when I was a kid I used to love to dress up in a costume and go trick or treating with my friends. Today I am 30 years old and now it’s my turn to be the adult who passes out candy to all the excited children of the land who come knocking at my door.

So it’s 8:00 a.m. and I’m getting up and getting dressed so I can go pick up some Halloween candy to pass out to the kids when they come trick or treating on my doorstep. As soon as I walk out of my house I’m greeted by a clear and sunny sky. That’s the first sign that it’s gonna be a good day. As I get in my car I look at all my surrounding neighbors and boy are they in the spirit. All of their decorations are heavy in the occasion. Of course most of them have the typical Jack-o lantern pumpkin sitting on the French porch, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Many of them have plastic statues of witches and skeletons, even blow up decorations of the same nature. Though all of these decorations look good even in the middle of the day, it is the night time hours that they’ll really shine the brightest.

I’m in my car now, and so the expedition to the store begins. As I’m making my way there I drive past all the houses on the pathway there and it seems like their decorations just get more and more intricate. What’s also interesting is the adults all look like they’re having a great time setting up their decorations. I think that reminiscent childhood spirit that I have about this day is flowing through them as well. When I finally get to the store the place is jam packed out. There are so many groups of people here getting their All Hallows’ Eve equipment just like me. It’s funny though, I normally would be bothered by a crowd like this on a normal day, but during this holiday season I have to say I’m actually enjoying this crowd. I even give a little shy and and embarrassed smile for how happy I am for how lively everyone is for this Halloween day.

I go down the aisles and start picking out my candy. Of course I start racking up on everything; Reese’s Cups, Skittles, M&Ms, Starbursts, Snickers, Sweet Tarts etc. I laugh thinking about how all these bags of candy are gonna cost me an arm, leg, maybe even a couple of arms, but eh, why trip? It’s for a god cause. When I get in the check out line I make note of everyone around me. All the adults I see are determined, just on a clear cut mission to do their duty to the kids of Halloween. All the children are happily careless and thinking about nothing but the fun they are gonna have tonight on the town hitting their candy licks.

I’ve finally made it back home with my truck load of candy and I start setting up my bowls that I’m gonna pass out soon. After setting up my candy bowls I pop some popcorn, grab me some sodas along with a stash of my own personal candy and make my way to the living room and start binge watching my favorite movies while I wait for the cavalry to ride in and collect what is owed to them.

The doorbell finally rings and it’s the first group of kids. One of them is dressed like Michael Myers fro the “Halloween” films, one is dressed like the Marvel superhero Thor and the last is dressed like a Disney Princess. In unison they all shout “TRICK OR TREAT”. I held out the candy bucket and let them pick out whatever they wanted while I complimented them on how great their attires were. As soon as those kids left another group of kids right behind them. They too were dressed up as their favorite characters from entertainment. As those kids left another group approached my door once more. After giving them their due sweets I kinda got a little scared wondering if I was gonna run out of candy before more kids showed up. Luckily I didn’t and the visitors kept coming.

By midnight I was nearly out of candy. The children of the bigyy cleaned me out and I could not have been more proud. My mission was accomplished and my Halloween was successful. Seeing all these trick or treaters reminded me of my family members and friends enjoying this madness ever year as kids. I guess you could say tonight represents a chaotic but also fun time known as Halloween and I certainly will never ever forfeit its role in my life.

~~Happy Halloween everyone.
