A Summer Of Regret

Some Things Are Best Kept Secret

By George HallPublished 5 months ago 4 min read

A women could be seen lying in a swimming pool, full of her own blood. Motionless. Flat on her back. Blood intersecting with the water. Maria suddenly awoke. Having the recurring dream of the nightmare that had unfolded last summer. Who would have thought a little bit of innocent fun would result in the death of her best friend. She still could picture her dead body adrift in the resort pool. It was a scary and haunting experience to know that she had been the one to do it. How could a fight escalate so bad, that she'd end up stabbing her best friend to death. No words could describe the pain and torment, she felt on a regular basis, from that night.

As she sat in the dimly illuminated interrogation room, of the prison. She recounted the events that led up to her best friends, Jessica’s death. The two of them had gone on a vacation to a remote scenic resort in Italy. The area was a stunning and beautiful place to spend the weekend together and the two couldn't be happier to spend a weekend alone together. They had been friends since high school and had decided to finally take the opportunity to take a break from the mundanity of modern life.

Both women were in their mid-thirty’s by now and living out their best lives. Both were set to get married and had left their husbands behind to spend a girl's weekend together. As they sat on sun beds, by the pool side. Sunglasses on and sipping cocktails together. They toasted to a weekend of fun, sun and frivolity.

“Cheers to a weekend full of getting drunk and having fun” Jessica yelled in her usually giddy fashion.

“Here, here” said Maria, clinging glasses with Jessica. As they soaked up the summer sun

“Darren would have loved to be here” Maria smiled. “He loves these kinds of epic sunsets”

“But then we couldn’t have had fun with just the two of us!” Jessica joked

“Ha ha, yeah, your right” she sniggered

“Did I ever tell you that Darren had a fling with some girl before we met” Maria inquired of Jessica

“No” Jessica said, “do you know what she was like?”

“I’m not too sure” she responded, “some floozy, no doubt”

“Ha ha, yeah, no doubt” she said awkwardly, “Actually Maria, i have a confession to make”

“Let me guess” she replied jokingly, “it was you?”

“In all seriousness, it was me” she responded

Maria suddenly got up from her chair and took her sunglasses off, “What?!, you're kidding me right?”

“I’m sorry Maria” she stated, “I’ve been wanting to tell you for years, but the timing never felt right”

“How do you mean!” she stated, getting very agitated. “You’ve known I had a crush on Darren since high school”

“I know, I’m sorry babes” she replied regretfully. “It just happened, you know”

“You couldn’t have told me this sooner?!” she yelled.

“Like I said Maria” she stated, “the timing never felt right”

Maria was getting very aggressive now, as she slammed the champagne glass on the ground.

“I hate you!” she yelled at Jessica

“Maria, calm down” she replied, “it was a long time ago, it meant nothing. We were just fooling around”

At this stage, Maria had gone extremely red with rage. She grabbed the now broken glass and started moving towards Jessica, as she got up from her sun chair as well.

“Maria!” she exclaimed, “what are you doing?”

“Teaching you a lesson” she replied, as the fumes in her head began to boil.

“This isn’t funny, Maria”. As said as she backed away from her.

Suddenly Maria lunged forward at Jessica and cut her around the neck with the broken glass. Jessica gasped for air as she suddenly fell into the swimming pool.

Maria’s expression immediately changed as she realized what she had just done. She immediately jumped into the water and dragged her friend to the edge of the pool. She placed her onto the tiles by the pool and pulled herself out. She began chanting her name, over and over again.

“Jessica, Jessica!” she exclaimed with distain in her voice.

Before eventually deciding to commence CPR on her. But no matter how hard she tried or how much she did, she could revive her best friend. She starred down at the broken glass she had been holding, dripping in blood now. As she immediately dropped to the floor, covered her eyes and sobbed. Suddenly she was back to reality as she saw the constable sitting across the desk from her.

“So that’s how it happened then?” he inquired of her

“Yes”, she replied mournfully, as she attempted to hold back the tears.

“Well, I'm afraid you're going to have to be put away for a long time Ms. Anderson” he stated, as he got up to leave the room.

He left the room and all that could be heard was the silent sobbing of Maria, thinking about the terrible thing she had done.
