A Lovers Field

A marigold flower challenge entry.

By Luke LenacioPublished 4 years ago Updated 4 years ago 3 min read

I stood in a field of wheat. The breeze created swirling patterns within the tall grass, as I shielded myself from it by zipping up my jacket.

I was supposed to meet Amanda at the field for some unknown reason. She left me a simple note on the table at Huston’s a local coffee shop. “Meet me where we first met.” Were all the words that were written as she placed the note under my cup to be found when I returned from purchasing a cookie. I departed for the field roughly half an hour later when I found the mysterious note.

It was getting cold as I saw someone in the distance sitting under a tree in the shade. I could just make out her favorite denim jacket through the shrubbery.

As I saw her, I spotted a single marigold flower which I picked, though in truth I had no clue why I was there, nor why I picked it. Amanda was simply a long-time friend I’d known since I was around sixteen. I held the flower behind my back so as to surprise Amanda when I arrived. I knew she loved marigolds, regardless, I had no intention of anything. Just a gesture of friendship.

As I got closer, she noticed me and immediately stood, then ran towards me and embraced me in the warmest of hugs. She almost knocked me over as we collided. I nearly dropped the flower, which now resided behind her back. She hadn’t noticed it at all.

“Timothy, you came! You remembered!” Amanda said, somewhat overly excited.

“How could I forget. I’m always here for you Amanda,” I said completely clueless as to what situation I was in.

“It was a long time ago,” Amanda said as she bit her bottom lip.

“Those were great days. Not a care in the world.” I broke our embrace to give Amanda the marigold. A tear rolled down her eye as she placed the flower in her hair.

“Thank you, Timothy. There’s been something I’ve been wanting to ask you? Have you ever thought about us?” Amanda said now seeming timid in comparison.

“Of course, I think about our friendship all the time. You’ve always been there for me and I’m grateful for everything you’ve done.”

“Me too, but have you ever thought that there could be more to us?” Amanda said. I was blind at the time. Blind to what we had and what we could be. I’d never thought about what really mattered in a partner, but I was only twenty-five years old at the time.

“More? Amanda, I don’t want to ruin things…” I said as I pondered the situation at hand. In truth I’d always thought of her as my best friend. We were almost inseparable; I really didn’t want to ruin that.

“It doesn’t have to. It could only ruin it if we let it,” she said, “I would never do anything to hurt you.”

“Nor I.” Amanda immediately rushed forward knocking me against the tree trunk as she attempted to give me the most passionate of kisses, but failed miserably as she kissed my chin with closed eyes. She opened her eyes as I laughed to which she turned away and almost cried.

I immediately knew my mistake and said, “please don’t go, I didn’t mean it like that. It was just a little funny is all.” This time I leant in for the kiss as she turned, a tender moment with no regrets to which she embraced me overpoweringly once again thrusting me against the trunk.

It was the start of a wonderous relationship. At first Amanda and I hid it from our friends, not wanting to be interfered with, but then, in time we went public. This was mostly beneficial as I no longer had to worry about other suitors. Amanda and I remained faithful to each other, regardless as to the many propositions we faced, and occasionally saved each other from during this time.

I was by no means a lady’s man, though I had a few suitors of my own, and Amanda knew that. Our first time I was apprehensive. I knew I wasn’t the greatest person in bed and I could explain the experience as tender, but not lengthy. It was a few months after we got together. Sex can ruin things, but love conquers all. It seemed she didn’t care, in time after many occurrences this changed. Though I was beholden only to Amanda.

In June 2017 we finally got married after having three beautiful children and have never looked back.
