A Heartless Woman

She no longer feels

By Tahany AzzabPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Once upon a time, a middle-aged woman suffered from loneliness. She wished to find love in human eyes... She decided to come out of her isolation. She worked as a saleswoman in a small store that sold antiques and accessories. The store, like no other, has become crowded with customers who come from all walks of life. No one knew the real reason behind the high demand for that particular store. No one knew why people loved this woman and why poets praised her in their poems.

One day, a handsome young man in his thirties came to the store. He came through the main door... He started browsing through the displayed goods. She noticed his eyes searching for her, and followed her wherever she goes. Especially that thing wrapped in valuable gift wrapping paper. She was holding it in her arms, as if he were an infant, fearing that he might be kidnapped. She felt worried by the young man's looks at her. She went to him and said gently: Welcome sir!

He replied while still staring at that mysterious thing in her arms: Welcome!

Then he continued to be silent.

She asked him in astonishment: Are you looking for something specific in the store that you want me to help you with?

He replied: Yes! I want to buy this thing into your arms at any price you ask.

She replied without hesitation: Sorry, sir! This is not for sale, it is my most valuable possession. Whenever a beggar for kindness comes here, I cut off a piece of this valuable thing and give it to him for free.

He said eagerly: “Then I would like to have the rest of it for myself.”

She objected strongly and said: No, I won't let you, you'll never have it.

Then she quickly left him after noticing the anger on his face. But he was faster than her. He followed her and blocked her path. Then he violently snatched what she was hiding in her arms. He pushed her hard, then ran quickly towards the door. She fell to the ground crying. She screamed at the top of her voice: Help me! Catch this thief! Prevent him from escaping! Passersby rushed and ran after him,

But they were unable to catch up or catch him. They returned to her wondering: What did this thief steal from you?

She answered them with tears streaming down her cheeks, just like the water of a waterfall at the edge of a river: he stole my heart!!

They dispersed around her.

They spread out in the city and spread the word among the people that the saleswoman no longer has anything to give them for free.

People became angry with her, and the city's poets satirized her with their poems. After it was described as a source of tenderness and solace…

They called her a poisonous snake...

As for her...

She learned that human hearts are fickle. And love is not given without return. So she didn't feel sad or angry. He didn't feel afraid or anxious... She became no longer looking for love.. She no longer fears isolation. She no longer feel lonely.. After she lost what was left of her heart…

She no longer feel anything...and she is not afraid of anything... Because she has become..

A heartless woman.
