A Day in the Life of Amy

Chapter 15

By Crystal BowiePublished 4 months ago 2 min read

Fiona’s loft was dimly lit when Amy arrived, the golden pools of light from the lamps giving the space a softer glow. She hadn’t texted first, hadn’t asked if it was okay—she just needed to be there.

But when Fiona opened the door, her expression wasn’t the warm welcome Amy had been hoping for.

“You’ve been crying,” Fiona said quietly, scanning her face.

Amy nodded, stepping inside. Max padded in behind her, as if he already knew this place was becoming home. “Mark knows. He saw us. He ended things.”

Fiona closed the door, leaning against it as she crossed her arms. Her eyes were steady, unreadable. “And now you’re here.”

Something in her tone stung. “Where else would I be?” Amy asked, her voice softer than she intended.

“That’s the question, isn’t it?” Fiona pushed off the door and walked closer, her steps measured. “Would you be here if Mark hadn’t ended it? Or would you still be trying to balance us like two halves of a secret life?”

Amy’s chest tightened. “Fiona, that’s not fair.”

“It’s the only fair thing,” Fiona replied, her gaze unflinching. “I can’t be your second choice. I won’t. If you’re here, if you want this—me—then it has to be all the way. No half measures. No hiding.”

The weight of her words pressed against Amy like a tidal wave. She wanted to protest, to explain the mess of fear and uncertainty still knotted inside her—but she couldn’t. Not when Fiona was standing there, so sure, so clear.

“I do want you,” Amy whispered. Her throat felt raw. “I’ve wanted you from the moment I met you. I was just scared—scared of letting go of the life I thought I was supposed to want.”

Fiona’s eyes softened, but her jaw stayed firm. “And now?”

Amy stepped forward, closing the space between them. “Now… I want the life that feels real. And that’s you.”

For a moment, silence stretched, taut and fragile. Then Fiona’s shoulders lowered, the tension slipping from her frame.

“Then prove it,” she said, her voice quieter now, but edged with hope.

Amy reached out, taking Fiona’s hands in hers. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”

The look in Fiona’s eyes shifted then—relief breaking through the guarded walls. She pulled Amy into her arms, holding her as if she’d been waiting for this moment all along.

And for the first time, Amy didn’t feel like she was standing on the edge of two worlds. She felt steady. Rooted. Chosen.
