A Conversation For The Children's Hospital
Inspired And Submitted To The Nothing But Voices Challenge

“Mommy, when are they coming to put me to sleep?”
“Five forty-five”
“What time is it now?”
“Five fifteen.”
“Are you saying? I have only a half hour to gather my thoughts.”
“Gather your thoughts?”
“Yes, now why are they coming in to wish me sweet dreams? When they should be saying good morning,”
“Our primary pediatrician health care provider needs to conduct an elective cosmetic treatment.”
“And why is an operation needed?”
“There was a microscopic demon inside me and took their revenge out on you,”
“That is right, making me permanently injured, not disabled or physically handicap,”
“Right,”
“Performing this well thought out intervention will make me less different, am I right?”
“Correct,”
“You will always be different, like a snowflake,”
“At times they can be picture post card inspiring but the stereotypical characteristic image can be a nightmare, am I right?
“What? Yeah, that is why we are taking the suggestion of the Doctor and putting you the sleep when the sun rises hoping the future will be filled with bright blue skies,”
“Mommy, what did you feel like when you heard the microscopic monster attacked me?”
“I was shocked and Daddy felt like a quarterback getting sacked by a defender they didn’t see coming,”
“Microscopic monsters can be like that, huh,”
“I guess so,”
“Excuse me, good morning,”
“Good morning nurse Debbie,”
“Good morning, Debbie,”
“I just need to check things out before we take you downstairs to the surgical theaters,”
“Just like preparing for a big show, all these people are here to get you ready, honey,”
“But Mommy, matinees are during the daytime, this is way too early for a production”
“Okay everything seems fine,”
“Debbie? Is the sun coming out today?”
“Very cloudy, huge chance of showers, but this medical procedure is going to assist you in escaping a hard knock life,”
“Sun will be out tomorrow, when I am alert, right?”
“Apparently it is supposed to be a beautiful day,”
“Thank you, Nurse Debbie,”
“I will be back in a few minutes with the prep injection”
“Will be here, “
“I could be asleep, where’s Daddy?”
“Getting his morning coffee,”
“Is he going to work today?”
“No, he is going to stay here at the hospital, waiting for you to return,”
“Honey, I brought you back a coffee, Snowflake you are fasting, so juice is going to have to wait,”
“And I can’t get up, Mommy, what time is it?”
“Five-forty-three,”
“Can I enter?”
“Yes, Nurse Debbie,”
“You're not Debbie,”
“I am Nurse Alice,”
“I thought you didn’t live here anymore?”
“Daddy!”
“I just need to do something, and it is not going to hurt,”
“Yes, it is,”
“Relax, Snowflake, if you shut your eyes, you won’t see it coming and then it won’t hurt as much,”
“How do you know that? Daddy,”
“I was a quarterback in college,”
“Oh, you are wearing shorts,”
“I am not going let you ruin my pajamas again,”
“Snowflake,”
“Look at me,”
“Okay Mommy,”
“Coming home to you is like coming home to milk and cookies,”
“There, it's all done”
“You see it wasn’t that bad”
“Yes, it was,”
“Now the hard part,”
“I go off into the black hole, so leave me alone”
“Thank you, Nurse Alice,”
“They will be here in a few minutes to take her downstairs”
“Thank you, Nurse Alice,”
“Honey, what started this?”
“As we have discussed, they said it was a microscopic madman,”
“But how did it get into my system?”
“God, only knows,”
“Time to go downstairs,”
“Good night, Mommy,”
“Have a good trip into the deep dark unknown,”
“We will be here when you get back with milk and cookies,”
“Can you get juice for me, I am going to need a pick me up when the sun appears in the morning,”
