Winter of 2009 late evening I remember the first time I’ve ever met my best friends. At first glance Taylor and Tyrone thought I was just another mute kid. I was with my older cousin at the time, they all had planned to go to a sliding party at their grandparents.
Their grandparents lived far in the woods on top of a big hill.
“Are we really sliding down that hill?" I questioned abruptly on their mid conversation as we walked up the hill.
Both Taylor and Tyrone looked at me in surprise.
“We thought you were a dude” Taylor says.
“Right I thought she was a mute too because that’s how this guy was" Tyrone points at my older cousin.
“Yeah, we drag her along sometimes and yes we all think of her like a little boy" my cousins laughs teasingly.
I shrugged and continued to walk up the hill thinking of where we are sliding.
Eventually we made to their grandparents place, they had a nice big yard and another big hill just on the other side of the hill we came from, but this hill leads down the lake. You can see from the top that their grandfather was preparing the ice down the hill. He scraped a small run way at the end.
Stood there about 5 minutes just staring at how beautiful it look when his grandmother turned on the Christmas lights that went all the way down to the end and around an ice rink.
Next thing you know she had gone down sliding with a big black carpet sled. My cousin and I were surprised to see an old lady go down.
“My grandparents are still kids” Tyrone says while getting ready to slide.
“Your coming with me first” Taylor demanded and grabs the hood on my jacket.
Before I could say anything we were sliding down the hill side to side. Everything even time felt like it was going slow, looked to my left saw my cousin trying to slow down using his foot but he flipped over so fast. I started laughing and pointed up the hill.
“ARMS IN" Taylor shouted. Tucked my arms in between my legs and looked to my right only to see Tyrone belly down on a small circle sled spinning around.
He was screaming and laughing so much because he couldn’t stop or slow down. Taylor than held me tight and yelled out “RAMP!”
Our sled went up for a few moments and crashed into a snow bank that his grandfather had piled up, luckily it was soft snow other wise we would’ve got hurt.
After realizing we stopped I looked around and saw a sled my cousin was using coming down the hill. He was on the side where the trees bordered the hill. Then comes down Tyrone still spinning around about to hit the ramp.
Taylor again shouts out “MOVE!!” then processed to shove me aside onto the deep snow.
The rush of adrenaline and stomach hurting from laughing so much got me peeing my pants. I sat myself up feeling embarrassed and looked over to Taylor and Tyrone both of them had their face covered in snow. Continued to laugh so much until I felt hand on my shoulder.
“Get up and move” said their grandmother while laughing so much and point up the hill.
On top were more kids sliding, getting ready and some already hitting the bottom of the hill?
Still embarrassed to move I gestured to her to come close.
“Uh I peed my pants” I whispered
She then gave me a look and points at the ski-doo which was waiting for us to take us back up.
The sliding proceeded on for few more hours along with a bon fire for wiener roasting and hot chocolate with fire works.
Taylor and Tyrone continued to keep in touch with me.
In memory of my two best friends
I will forever cherish the memories we had together. Rest in peace.
