Undoubtedly, the Thai island of Koh Samui is an engrossing place to visit at any time of the year, but it is particularly vibrant at the time of Songkran or the Thai New Year. Songkran may be regarded as one of the nation’s most popular and exciting festivals, enjoyed by both locals and foreign visitors, including those holidaying on this enchanting island. Even if you have missed this year's festival, here's what you need to know so you can be well-prepared for next year!

History

Songkran happens to be a time-honoured festival that is celebrated yearly from the 13th to the 15th of April in Thailand, though related activities and events can last for longer. It is considered to mark the commencement of the traditional local New Year. Interestingly, the term ‘Songkran’ has Sanskrit origins and means ‘change’ or ‘transformation’. Originally, the New Year was mainly marked by paying due respect to elders, engaging in merit-making at Buddhist temples, and symbolically cleansing statues of Buddha with water. However, in the course of time, this event became more lively and energetic, evolving into a festivity celebrated by engaging in water fights and enjoying carefree parties.

Water fights

The animated and exuberant water fights are one of the best-known aspects of Songkran in Thailand. Just as in other parts of the country, lively and exhilarating water battles take place in the streets of Koh Samui during this event. Both locals as well as foreign tourists take to the streets, drenching all-comers with buckets, water guns, hoses and more. Everyone gets soaked to the skin, and there are no hard feelings caused by these activities. Only monks, the elderly, police officers, pregnant ladies and small children are exempt from the enthusiastic soakings.

Parties

Lively parties are another vital aspect of the Songkran celebrations in Koh Samui. Everyone gets into the festive mood and dances their cares away amidst the idyllic island surroundings and laidback ambience. Numerous clubs, bars and restaurants, particularly at places such as Chaweng as well as Fisherman’s Village, organise Songkran parties. Both live musical performances and sets from skilled DJs are provided at these venues. If your main objective is to dance your heart out and enjoy some tipples, these venues would not disappoint. A Koh Samui resort to consider from which you could easily visit these party hotspots and experience Songkran, as well as other local events, is Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort.

Traditional activities

However, there is also a very different side to the Songkran celebrations in Koh Samui; this would include the various traditions and spiritual practices that many Thais observe during this event. Numerous locals commence their activities at this time by visiting temples in the morning. At these places of worship, Thais pour water on Buddha statues, engage in merit-making rituals and obtain blessings from the monks. Locals also take the opportunity to spring clean their homes to create a new start to the year to come. Another important local tradition is venerating elderly members of the family at this time; a noteworthy ceremony is pouring water gently on these elders to wash away bad luck and create a fresh slate for the year to come.

Cultural performances and other aspects

Songkran is also a great time at which to gain an insight into Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, and during this period, various interesting cultural performances are staged in Koh Samui. These include presentations of typical Thai dance and demonstrations of Muay Thai, the renowned combat art. You could further take part in the engrossing traditional ceremonies conducted by the locals during the celebrations. Visitors may additionally admire enthralling parades which showcase the distinctive heritage of the nation. Naturally, your visit to this island wouldn’t be complete without sampling the delectable, traditional local food on offer as well.
