What Time Is It?

Come on grab your friends we’ll go to very distant lands. With Jake the dog and Finn the human the fun will never end, it’s Adventure Time!

I first discovered Adventure Time in 2017 when my oldest daughter found it on Hulu. It became a quick favorite of my little three-year-old and it was always on our tv. I spent the first few weeks ignoring the show and using the time she would spend watching it to catch up on housework or just to get a few minutes to myself. Then came the first episode of season five entitled “Finn the Human”.

This is the episode that caught my attention while I was scrolling through my phone and started my obsession. “Finn the Human” grabbed my attention so fast because the characters look so much different in this episode. The fact that Jake wasn’t talking to Finn also messed with my head a little bit and I wanted to know what happened. I ended up watching the entire series over the next few days and I realized how crazy I was to ever have ignored this masterpiece. Before I start telling you how deep my obsession has grown, let’s dig into some of my favorite characters and episodes.

First up is the little Never Ending Pie Throwing Robot that we call Neptr. Finn creates him in the fifteenth episode of the first season solely to prank Jake. At first my favorite little robot was a piece of junk who didn’t work at all so Finn throws him out the window. A storm approaches and Neptr is struck by lightening which brings him to life, it however did not give him enough power to launch never ending pies at Jake’s face like Finn had wanted. So, they set off to the Ice Kingdom and Neptr ended up getting struck by Ice King’s lightening which made the Ice King Neptr’s biological father. Neptr still choses to live with Finn over Ice King though. As I write this, my 4-year-old is watching this very episode in her room. Neptr is one of my favorites because he is hilarious, and I just love him. He’s full of pranks and always brings a smile to my face with every word he says.

My next favorite character is Simon AKA the Ice King. If I’m being honest, I started out hating Ice King with a passion. Then I discovered that Ice King is actually an amazing kind-hearted man named Simon. The crown that Ice King wears is magic and give him ice powers which is how he became the king of ice kingdom. All magic comes with a price though and the crown drove him crazy. It caused him to lose his memories and changed him into a totally different person. After realizing this I began to adore Ice King, I don’t really have an explanation for it. I just love that crazy old man.

To tie in with Simon, my absolute most favorite character is Marceline the Vampire Queen. Simon took care of Marceline when she was just a scared little girl. She is actually the reason that he succumbed to the side effects of the crown in the first place. He had to protect her from the evils of the world, and he needed the crown to do it. Hundreds of years passed between that time and the time of the tv show but she never forgot Simon and she still makes sure he is ok. Marceline is my all time favorite because she has a hard sassy exterior, but she is good hearted on the inside. My favorite episode with her in it is actually her first appearance on the show. “Eviction” is the twelfth episode of the first season, and it centers around Marceline kicking Finn and Jake out of their home because she technically owns it. The boys look for a new home in a lot of different places and finally find a cave that they intend to live in. That is until Marceline shows up yet again with a claim to their home. After a fight between the boys and Marceline she decides that she likes them, and they can have their tree house back. It is easily one of the best episodes in the entire show in my opinion.

When my husband found out about Adventure Time: Distant Lands on HBO Max he sent me a text with the link of the trailer for it. My response was “Well we have to get it. And don’t even try to tell me no because you knew this would happen the moment you sent it to me.” I watched both episodes that day and have watched them a few times since. In fact, I watch Adventure Time every day. It is easily my guilty pleasure and I have no shame in that. My obsession is also no secret to anyone who knows me. I proudly display my Adventure Time cookbook in my home, my credit card has Marceline the vampire queen on it, my husband’s credit card has Jake on it, my friend and I have incorporated it into our current Dungeons and Dragons campaign and if all that wasn’t enough for someone to figure out that this family loves Adventure Time, they usually get the hint when they realize our youngest daughter is named Marceline. Yes, we named our daughter after Marceline the Vampire Queen and I have sung the house hunting song from the episode “Evicted” every day of her life. This show is amazing, and I strongly suggest you check it out if you haven’t already.
