Waves of Life

Only the Beginning

By Monica Published 5 years ago 4 min read

Under the notion that we can make the best of this terrible tempest, living our lives against the current in which we cant see. Taken from infancy and tossed here and there like waves out in the ocean. Young as they were friends they would forever be. Their foster home offered some refuge but no love was ever there. Love they often wondered if they knew what it meant, if they had ever felt it’s warm embrace. All four had long ago wondered if they would ever belong. They felt so different because different is how they were made to feel. But something happens when you have friends by your side, the world doesn’t seem to engulf you in it’s negative and often debilitating state of mind. How often would they have given their all if only given the chance. They were labeled and marked and often mocked. Their clothes were worn with tiny holes here and there. Shoes, what shoes for they loved to be barefoot.

Day after day they would find a place to escape, whether an abandoned building or the nearby woods. Their imagination would take them far from where they now were; from imagining they had riches to being pirates out in the sea and everything in between. The one most inner hope and dream to be able to be in a family together all four being loved by a mother and father. How fleeting those thoughts were for there was no use lingering on things that won't be for if any of them ever got adopted it would be nearly impossible for all four to go to the same home. So they played and made the best of their time together with what they had been given in this life thus far.

The going of another day; sneaking into the foster home not because it’s late but because it would disturb their foster parents' sleep. They weren’t really cared for; they ate what they could find in the kitchen, which wasn’t much, before heading off to bed. They would take turns telling a goodnight story which they would just make up in their minds and it wouldn’t be long till they would be fast asleep. Suddenly not long after they fell asleep they heard a sound outside their window. As they peeked out they noticed a small black notebook laying on the ground. Where it came they could not tell, and they stared at it for a long time before deciding to open the window and picking it up. The youngest of the four was nine years old, the oldest 12 years old so they were able to read what was in the black notebook. It’s first few pages talked about everyday things, passages from what it seemed a time lost. They tried to understand what was written the best they could even though the language was a bit different to them.

For the next few days they took this black notebook everywhere with them, to them it seemed like a treasure. They would make up stories from things they would read and memorize phrases and words that to them seemed a bit funny to even say. They took their time reading it, they didn’t want to reach its end. One day they did reach its end but in that last page there was drawn a map with an X on it. If ever there were four boys more excited you wouldn’t know it. They were going to go on an adventure. So they spared no time and gathered some supplies then headed off to unforeseen paths.

They recognized parts of the map's direction because they had explored almost every inch of the town, since they didn’t feel like they had a home to go to. Once they got to paths unknown a little fear creeped in but the thought of treasure and an opportunity to stay together pushed them forward. It took them about three days to reach the place marked in the black notebook and in looking around they noticed a small crawl space between two trash cans. They hesitated for a few minutes and then one by one crawled right into the space. On the other side seemed like a dream there was candy, food and so much to drink. Surely they had died and gone to heaven but they didn't stand there long before they started eating and drinking, it wasn’t long till they were overfilled. They laid there in awe till they fell asleep.

As they began to wake up they ate a bit more and then started to look around. In a corner there were some stairs and as soon as they reached the top they noticed a gold box, their treasure box they thought. They rushed towards it and opened it at once, inside a cashiers check for $20,000 dollars. They wondered who would leave a check? How would they be able to cash it?. Soon they went through the small crawl space and headed back to the foster home with the check in hand.

It was a long journey back and they were so exhausted they passed out as soon as they got to their beds. Soon it was morning they woke up slowly and as each remembered what they had gone through the last few days they began to search around for the small black notebook and the check. To their surprise they only found the black notebook and when they opened it nothing but blank pages. Although disappointed they cherished all that they went through and wrote all about it in the small black notebook which memories meant more to them then the $20,000 dollars they had found. They were learning in their youth to ride the waves as they come big or small and they were happy.
