The Raindrop and the Dewdrop

The morning sun was brightly shinning. The Raindrop woke up and looked up from his muddy puddle of water. He saw a silvery spider web on a branch of the Oak tree. Hanging from the spider web was a sparkling Dewdrop. The sunshine made the Dewdrop glow with so many colors, and much brighter than a diamond. The Dewdrop was so pretty.

The Raindrop said, “ Good-morning Dewdrop. You look so pretty.”

The Dewdrop said, “ Oh, thank you Raindrop. The sun is so warm and bright. What a great day.”

“Maybe for you, Dewdrop, but not for me,” said the Raindrop.” I sit in this muddy, smelly puddle and wait to go down the sewer drain.”

The Dewdrop moved closer to the Raindrop. “Say Raindrop, what happens when you go down the sewer drain? Where do you go? What do you see?”

The Raindrop was surprised that the Dewdrop was so interested in his life, and he said, “ Do you really want to know, really?”

“Oh yes, I do. Honestly I do.” Said the Dewdrop. “I am so tired of just hanging in this web every morning. It can be very boring just looking pretty, and just hanging around.”

The Raindrop stretched his body up from the puddle and closer to the Dewdrop and said. “I wish with all my heart that I could one day be as pretty as you. Oh boy do I wish I could shine and sparkle like you do.”

“And I wish I could have all the adventure, and excitement that you have, Raindrop,” said the Dewdrop.

Suddenly the Raindrop started swimming around in the puddle. He was so excited. “Say, Dewdrop”, said the Raindrop. “I have a great idea. If I showed you where I go, and what I see and do, will you show me how I can become a beautiful Dewdrop.”

“Of course I can. I am so excited to go with you. We can have so much fun,” said the Dewdrop.

And with all her might, the Dewdrop stretched her body toward the puddle. Suddenly she broke loose from the spider web, and she was swimming next to the Raindrop.

“I’m ready,” she said. “When do we start our trip Raindrop?”

“We need a little push. We need some rain, or wind to get going, or we will sit in this smelly, muddy puddle,” said the Raindrop.

Just then, as if by magic, a soft summer sun-shower started to fall, and the Raindrop and Dewdrop floated toward the sewer drain and down into it.

It was so dark in the sewer, but the two friends could see each other’s eyes.

They passed shoes, soda bottles and empty tin cans. They saw worms, spiderwebs, and cockroaches on the walls of the sewer. The Dewdrop almost got stuck in an old baseball glove.

The Dewdrop was suddenly riding on the back of a tiny alligator. Balls, bags, leaves, branches, and newspapers went floating by. Big and small rats, some brown, some black and some even white were playing tag on the sides of the sewer walls, and others swimming in the water. A bunch of bats flew over the head of the Dewdrop.

“Raindrop”, said the dewdrop. “This is great. I have never seen anything like this. “

The Raindrop was surprised, and said”, You really like this. You mean you’re not scared?”

“On no, I’m not scared at all. I know that you will take care of me.”

Up ahead, there was a bright glow of light, and both the Raindrop and Dewdrop flowed toward the light. Suddenly they dropped from the sewer pipe and splashed into a river.

Swimming in the river, they saw sailboats, and all kinds of fish, snails, clams, crabs, and water snakes. Down in the river bottom they swam through a sunken ferryboat. A motor boat went speeding by, and they just missed getting hit by a water skier.

The river got bigger, deeper, and wider. The Raindrop and the Dewdrop went under a big bridge, and entered the ocean.

“Be careful Dewdrop,” said the Raindrop. “We are in the ocean now. The water is colder, and the waves are big. Stay close to me.”

Suddenly a whale blew out a big fountain of water, and sprayed all over the Dewdrop.

“That was great,” she shouted. “What was that, Raindrop?”

Oh that was Moby Dick, the whale. Be careful here comes a bunch of porpoise.”

The Dewdrop was surrounded by dozens of dancing porpoise. The porpoise bounced the Dewdrop from one nose to another. She was so happy, and smiling. The Dewdrop never had such a fun time.

The sun was burning bright. The ocean water became calm. The Raindrop and the Dewdrop were resting on the top of the water, and the Raindrop said: “Dewdrop do you think that now you can show me how to become a Dewdrop”.

“Sure I can, Raindrop. Listen carefully, and do just what I do.”

“First I want you to float on your back, and close your eyes cause the sun is so bright. “

The Raindrop closed his eyes and floated on the ocean water. The sun was very warm on his body.

“Now soon you will feel hot, but you won’t burn. You won’t get hurt,” said the Dewdrop.

The Raindrop was feeling very warm.

“Now soon you will feel like you are floating in the air. You won’t be able to see your body. We will be going higher and higher into the sky. Don’t worry, I will be right near you, “said the Dewdrop.

Both the Raindrop and the Dewdrop were floating high into the sky, almost into the clouds.

High up in the sky, all that they could see of each other was their eyes.

The Raindrop shouted to the Dewdrop; “Say, Dewdrop, where is my body, I can’t see my body”.

“Oh you will soon get it back. It is very cold up here in the clouds, isn’t it,” said the Dewdrop.

“It sure is”, said the Raindrop.

“Say Dewdrop, I’m starting to see my body again. Boy am I cold.”

“Raindrop, we have to stay here all night, but in the morning we are gonna start falling back to earth, and pretty fast. Just follow me”, said the Dewdrop.

All night long the Raindrop and the Dewdrop floated among the clouds. In the early morning, the two friends fell from the clouds, and both of them landed on the spider web hanging from the oak tree. The Raindrop looked at himself, and he smiled the biggest smile. He was shinny and glowed like a diamond. He was so beautiful, and so was his best friend, the Dewdrop.
