Prologue - High School Entrance
Jimin squealed rubbing his hands together as they stood in the line to sign up for their extra curricular activities and main classes. Taehyung grinned watching his best friend from Elementary geek out about entering high school.
"Hey Jimin, you're so excited." He observed, chuckling as Jimin nodded really fast making his hair bounce lightly on his head.
"I am!! I heard they have an amazing Dance program here, they have a whole theater arts section and a bunch of sub arts to choose from! "
Taehyung smiled knowing how much his friend liked to dance and would probably choose the Contemporary dance in Theater. He wasn't sure if he would continue on with dance with him. It was true they had taken dance together all through middle school. But Taehyung had just joined to be with Jimin and support him. He wasn't as passionate about it as he was. Jimin was not only passionate but extremely good. Entering high school was all about finding what you were good at, finding your niche and owning it and making friends. He and Jimin would always be friends but he felt it was time to branch out and really try to find something he was good at. Jimin grabbed his hand and squeezed it making Taehyung turn his attention to him
"Are you coming into dance with me?"
Taehyung shrugged, "I'm not sure Jimin, I was ok at it in middle school. But this is high school, I should join something I'll be pretty good at."
"But you're good at acting! You can join the theater program and just go under acting."
Taehyung chuckled nodding, "That's true, I might just do that" He says with a smile making Jimin light up and nod eagerly.
They felt like they stood in line forever as kids picked out their extra curricular activities. Soon enough though, Jimin got to the front of the line and hurried and signed up for the Theater Program and smiled when he read in the fine print that it required auditions. He squealed again and signed his name. Taehyung chuckled and even though he had more than enough time to think it over, when the time came to look over the list of extra curricular activities he just felt stumped. So many; whatever he picked was what would pretty much define him for the next four years. He loved Jimin, to death. But he was hoping to branch out for high school, really become a social butterfly. He loved people, he loved to socialize and meet new people. Whereas Jimin, didn't so much. Jimin was perfectly happy being alone, being secluded just dancing or reading a book. So he didn't want to be stuck by his side the way they had been through elementary and middle school. He felt bad for feeling like that but he was ready to explore and broaden his horizons. He sighed and quickly marked several boxes giving him options and slammed the pencil down moving out the line so the next student could sign up for their classes.
Jimin ran up to Taehyung grinning wide, "I signed up for Contemporary under the Theater Program and Acting. I figure we could do it together.
Taehyung looked at him and smiled a bit nodding, "Right."
Jimin looked at him and tilted his head feeling something wasn't right. When Tae got quiet like that he usually was keeping something to himself and not expressing everything he truly felt. He grabbed Tae's wrist gently and Tae stopped and looked back at him, "what's up?"
"That's what I was gonna ask you." Jimin said quietly.
He spoke so soft it made Tae curse himself in his head. Jimin was so sensitive , he didn't want him to know the truth. So he decided to play Coy not wanting to go down the emotional slide with Jimin.
"Nothing Jimin, I'm fine." He pulled his hand gently out of Jimin's soft grip and kept walking. He didn't turn back, even to him his voice sounded unconvincing. He felt Jimin standing in the same spot and closed his eyes and sighed. "Jimin, come on everything's fine. Let's go to your house"
"Why are you lying to me? We're best friends Tae Tae. Did I do something?" Jimin's eyes were already watering as his voice shook a bit.
He turned back to Jimin and put his arm around Jimin and smiled at him trying to reassure him everything was ok. "Of course you didn't do anything, Jimin."
"Then what's wrong?" He asked a bit more firmly pushing back some.
Taehyung sighed and shrugged, "I...I just wanna do something different these next four years you know."
Jimin shook his head not understanding what he was meaning. Tae continued wording his next sentences carefully.
"Like I want to really be out there for high school. I wanna date and go to parties and have lots of friends and..... run through halls"
Jimin stood there looking at him a bit confused and shrugged, "Ok, what's that gotta do with you enrolling in acting with me? I thought you liked doing things with me."
"I do Jimin! I do, it's just, it's always been just us. And I want to branch out and make new friends and stuff."
"And you can't do that if we're taking classes together?"
Taehyung sighed and Jimin just studied his face and nodded, "No, I get it. It's ok. You don't have to take Acting if you don't want to or dance or anything. You can do what you want. I enjoyed being with you but I guess feelings weren't mutual. I get it." Jimin put his hand up as Tae started to interrupt him. "I don't really feel like having company, I'll see you the first day of school....you know ..or not."
Taehyung felt horrible as Jimin walked off alone. Wasn't it possible to branch out and keep your childhood best friend? Jimin was so sensitive, he took it completely the wrong way.
**********
Taehyung felt bad about hurting Jimin's feelings but he meant every word of it. He was psyched for high school and as the sun leaked through his blinds he couldn't help the grin that spread across his face as he hugged his legs on his bed. Jimin was wrong though, he didn't want to ditch him as a friend. He rolled over and dialed his best friend. He bit his lip nervously as Jimin's phone rang for a while before he picked up.
"Good morning Tae Tae" He said, his usual sweet voice was back
"Good morning! Are you excited for the first day of school!?" He asked trying to get him back to his level of excitement he had yesterday
"Mhm. You never told me what classes you signed up for." Jimin said simply
"Oh, I think I'm gonna try out for the basketball team."
The line was quiet for so long Tae had to check if Jimin was still there, "Hello?"
"Yeah...I'm here. I didn't know you liked basketball."
Taehyung chuckled a bit, "well me either. I kind of met this kid yesterday after you left and we played some ball and he convinced I should join the team with him."
"Making friends already, that's my Tae." There was no animosity in his voice, just a statement. Tae smiled nodding. "You know you'll always be my best friend though. you know that right Jimin. No matter what."
"Yeah, I'm sorry I reacted like that yesterday. Of course you wanna have the best high school experience you can dream of. I..I think my feelings were just hurt because I didn't know I held you back like that...."
"You didn't Jimin, I loved hanging out with you all this time. I really did, we have made such awesome memories. But I'm such a social butterfly -"
Jimin laughed softly, "I know. I really do know that." He said smiling, as Tae was always more outgoing than he was. "I really hope you have an awesome year Tae. I'm gonna pull out of Acting, I only signed up to be with you. So I think I'll do Contemporary and take an art class
"That sounds cool Jimin. When Basketball Season is not in I'll be doing track and field. I can be pretty quick."
Jimin grinned even though Tae couldn't see it over the receiver. "We better get ready so we're not late. Do you want to go to school together?"
"Don't be silly Jimin, I'll be at your house in ten minutes. Be ready!"
Jimin looked over at his clock by the bed and jumped out of bed hopping in the shower and picking out his clothes for the day. Tae made it over in about twenty minutes and the two headed to class. Jimin gave him his finger, "Pinky swear, friends forever"
Tae chuckled and nodded locking his pinky with his, "Pinky swear"
Jimin smiled and saw a cute small framed boy come up to Tae and figured it was the kid he'd met after he went home. He hi5'd him happily and Tae laughed at something he said. Jimin tried not to feel too hurt and hurried off to find his own group in the theater.
