The Front Porch Light

The small glow that kept us believing we could find our way back.

By David LittPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

There’s a little light above our front porch. I’ve always kept it on at night—not just for safety, but because I like the way it makes our house feel warm and welcoming.

But during the months when we were fighting to keep our home, that porch light became something else entirely. It became a symbol of hope, even when everything else felt dark.

When the Floor Fell Out

We thought we were secure. We had steady jobs, a modest savings account, and a home we loved. But it only takes a few unexpected turns to change everything.

First came a medical emergency that drained most of our savings. Then my husband’s company announced layoffs, and his position was cut. By the time my hours at work were reduced, we were relying on credit cards just to stay afloat.

I kept telling myself it was temporary—that we’d bounce back in a few months. But instead, the bills piled higher, and the mortgage slipped further out of reach.

The Day It Became Real

The foreclosure notice came on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon. I found it tucked between utility bills and grocery coupons, an unassuming envelope carrying the heaviest weight.

I sat down on the porch steps, holding the letter in my lap, staring at the quiet street. The words blurred as I read them over and over, but the meaning was painfully clear: we were out of time.

That night, I left the porch light on, even though I sat awake in the living room, wondering if it would still be our porch much longer.

The Hidden Struggle

We didn’t talk about it at first—not to friends, not to family, not even much to each other. It’s hard to explain the shame that comes with foreclosure, the feeling that somehow you’ve failed, even when circumstances were beyond your control.

Every day felt like wearing a mask. I smiled at neighbors, packed lunches, and helped my kids with homework, all while quietly carrying the weight of uncertainty.

But silence made the fear worse.

The Turning Point

One night, as I stood on the porch looking out at the neighborhood, my husband joined me. We didn’t say anything for a while, just listened to the crickets and watched the light from our porch spill softly onto the steps.

Finally, he said, “I don’t want to lose this.”

Neither did I.

That night, we decided we were done avoiding the problem.

Finding Our Way Forward

The next day, we started making calls. We reached out to the mortgage company, asked questions we were nervous to ask, and learned about hardship assistance we didn’t even know existed.

I spent hours researching homeowner rights, foreclosure timelines, and local programs designed to help families like ours. I found forums where people shared their stories—their setbacks and victories—and suddenly, I didn’t feel so alone.

We gathered documents, filled out forms, and fought through endless hold music and confusing paperwork. It was exhausting, but slowly, we began to see options where before there had been none.

The Night the Light Felt Different

Months later, we got the letter we’d been waiting for. The foreclosure process had been paused, giving us the breathing room we so desperately needed.

That evening, I turned on the porch light and stood there for a long time, watching it glow softly in the dark.

It didn’t just illuminate the steps—it reminded me how far we’d come.

What I’ve Learned

Foreclosure isn’t just about losing a house—it’s about losing the place where your life happens. But I also learned this: there is help, there are options, and you are not alone.

Sometimes, the smallest light can guide you through the darkest moments.
