Teenage mom

My life as a teenage mom

By Felisha AcebedoPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Have you ever noticed that tv is glamorizing teenage pregnancy? I have watched a few shows on MTV called 16 & pregnant and Teen Mom 1 &2 and I tell my self, "I wish I had it that easy".

Being a teenage mom myself was not a glamorous as they make it seem to be. What they don't show you on these shows is how hard life will be from that moment you become a teenage mom. I become a mother at the age of 18. Granted I finished high school while pregnant but my life after graduation would never be the same. The struggles I have had to deal with and are dealing with never go away.

Being a mother at 18, was a huge adjustment. I could barely take care of my self much less another life. I am fortunate to say that the father to my first child, now husband, didn't flee when I told him I was pregnant as so many teenage boys do when they hear they are going to be a dad. He stuck around, unfortunately he had to drop out of high school to be able to support his now growing family. We did have the support we needed from both our mother's but it still wasn't enough. Living in a small town that we live in, there were not very many job opportunities for a high school drop out with a baby on the way. My husband, was able to find a job that would pay him $200 a week, at the time we thought that would be a great job, until reality kicked in. I was getting closer to my due date and we needed to find a place of our own. We were able to find a little one bedroom apartment which we thought was pretty awesome. We would be living on our own, no one could tell us what do, we thought we were living in paradise. Then we had to get a car to get around town since we were living on our own but since we were barely eighteen we didn't have enough credit to get a car on our own. Needless to say we had to use my mother's credit to get a car under the conditions that we make sure the payment was due on time. Of course, we would follow those conditions, we needed a car. Well then we started getting bill in that were all together roughly $300. So with my husband only making $200 a week, rent was $200, car payment was $$185, and bills were about $300. we found out real fast how broke we were about to be. The baby wasn't here yet and I am already stressing of how we're going to make it because we still have to buy diapers, wipes, clothes, etc.. All the essentials needed to take care of a baby and we barely had enough money to feed ourselves. So I don't see how on these shows these girls have their nails done and have all the expensive clothes when at their age I could barely afford to survive.

With that being said if you're going to make a "reality" show about being a teenage mother. Then make it reality. Show the daily struggles one has to go through in order to survive being a teenage mother. Because all I know is that my life was not a glamourous as they on show on tv nor is it now. I've had to go through many challenges in live to get where I am now and I am no where near where I want to be.
