Simple Ways to Calm Your Children Before Bedtime

Get that Bedtime Routine Down

By KevinPublished 7 years ago 3 min read

Getting your children to go to bed at a decent time can be a complete battle if you do not have the right strategies and resources at your disposal. Luckily, with the right amount of research and experimenting, you can find the perfect way to get your kids to bed on time without your home turning into a complete war zone. This does not mean that every night will be absolutely perfect, but it does mean that you will be able to keep your sanity and hopefully be able to get some serious shut eye.

Here are five things you can do to ensure a smoother transition into bedtime:

Set Expectations

Communication is going to be a big item when it comes to your relationship with your children. While it may seem like they never listen or they choose not to listen, find a time where you can have some quality time. This will give you the opportunity to talk to them without raising your voice and share what you expect for bedtime.

This could be done in a family meeting setting or you just talking to each of your kids one on one. Tell them what you want them to do before bedtime such as brushing their teeth or taking a bath. Set a time when they should be in bed and stick to that time even if it gets hard. You can always adjust things if they don’t work out.

Establish a Routine

This could be the most important thing you can do to help your child get ready for bed. This routine should not take all night or even several hours, it should take about one hour maximum. Your bedtime routine should consist of getting into pajamas, putting all electronics away, and hygiene such as brushing teeth and going to the bathroom.

This is a great opportunity to talk to your children and see what they would like to include in this routine. If they are in school, getting their schoolwork and lunches ready for the next day could be added.

Use Different Products

Maybe you have a really fussy baby that struggles with self-soothing and calming down. There are many different products that can help your baby calm down and fall asleep. There are different essential oils, check out some Young Living Reviews to see what products you can use on your baby. There are also lotions that are infused with lavender and other soothing products to promote soothing and sleep.

Visit a Doctor

If your kid is just not going to bed or is not staying asleep, it may be time to go to a doctor. If they are experiencing constant bedwetting even though they are fine through the day, this is a good sign to make that doctor’s appointment.

A doctor will be able to tell you what is normal and what you should expect from your child as they grow up. This can help you worry less and give you peace of mind, which may help you fall asleep a little bit faster at night.

Let Them Experience the Consequences

Yes, you can’t keep the consequences of your child’s actions away from them forever. You can stall them or pretend like they don’t exist, but the negative consequences can be the best learning tool for them.

With that being said, this could be a situation where the consequences of not going to bed early could be helpful in teaching them the importance of going to bed early. They may be absolutely grumpy and cranky the next morning, but it should get the message across that they need to get sleep.

Getting your children to go to bed does not have to be a constant battle. It can take some time to figure out what works and what doesn’t, but with some patience and research, you can what is best for your children. What are some things that work for your children?
