Sheinelle Jones Mourns the Loss of Her Husband

Sheinelle Jones, beloved co-host of NBC’s Today show, is navigating an unimaginable loss. Her husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away at just 45 years old after a difficult battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

The heartbreaking news was shared with viewers during the May 23 broadcast of Today, where Jones’ colleagues delivered the announcement with heavy hearts and loving words. Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin, Al Roker, Carson Daly, Dylan Dreyer, and Jenna Bush Hager paid tribute to Ojeh, reflecting on his warmth, his deep devotion to his family, and the immense love he had for his children.

“There are no words for the pain we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children,” Guthrie said during the live broadcast. “Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him… Sheinelle, Kayin, Uche, Clara — we are with you. You are our family.”

Craig Melvin, a close friend of the couple, echoed those sentiments, recalling Ojeh as a devoted father who was always present — whether cheering from the sidelines at a soccer match or beaming in the audience at school concerts and recitals. “He loved those kids more than anything else in the world,” Melvin said. “He was that dad.”

Uche Ojeh’s passing comes just months after Jones took a break from Today in January, revealing she needed time to attend to a private family health matter. At the time, she did not disclose details, but shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “I sincerely appreciate all of you who have reached out while I’ve been absent from the show. I want to share with you that I’m taking time to deal with a family health matter.”

She continued, “It’s not lost on me how lucky I am to have the support of my Today show family, but to also have all of you. Your kindness means so much to me. I’ll see you soon.”

Now, as she processes the loss of her husband, Jones has once again turned to her community. On the day of the announcement, she posted a video clip of the Today segment on social media with a brief but powerful caption: “Thank you, for all of your love and support. ❤️”

Her words were few, but the emotion behind them said more than any long statement ever could.

Jones and Ojeh’s love story began more than two decades ago. They met when she was a freshman at Northwestern University, and he was a high school senior touring the campus. In a 2024 interview with the school’s alumni magazine, Jones recalled the serendipitous moment with a smile: “I was a fake tour guide… I was just walking to class,” she laughed. “I told him I would take him around because he was cute.”

That casual encounter turned into a lasting romance. After dating for eight years, Ojeh proposed on the very campus where they met — in the middle of a rainstorm. The couple married in 2007 and went on to build a beautiful life together, raising three children: 15-year-old Kayin and 12-year-old twins, Clara and Uche.

Despite Jones’ public profile as a television journalist, the couple largely kept their private life out of the spotlight, focusing instead on their family, each other, and the moments that mattered most. Friends describe Ojeh as quiet but strong, deeply loyal, and endlessly proud of his wife and children.

“He was always there,” one family friend shared. “He wasn’t loud about it, but you could feel the love he had for Sheinelle and the kids in everything he did. He supported her career, he showed up for his kids, and he made sure his family always came first.”

As news of Ojeh’s passing spreads, fans, viewers, and colleagues have flooded Jones’ social media pages with messages of support, offering prayers, condolences, and words of strength.

“Sheinelle has given so much of herself to all of us over the years,” one follower wrote. “Now it’s our turn to show up for her.”

Grief, especially when public, is never easy. But Jones’ grace, vulnerability, and strength throughout this difficult time serve as a reminder of the deep bonds that connect us all — as coworkers, as friends, as parents, and as people.

As she continues to mourn and heal, her Today family and fans remain by her side, sending love and holding space for her and her children during this painful chapter.

This is so sad. Losing a spouse is incredibly tough. It makes you realize how precious life is. I can only imagine what Sheinelle and her kids are going through. It's great to see her colleagues showing so much support. How do you think she'll find the strength to move forward? And what kind of impact will this have on her work at the Today show?
