Planning Your First Disney Trip

A Magical Guide & How to Start

By Browntown FamilyPublished about a year ago 6 min read

Planning your first Disney trip is a thrilling adventure, but it can also feel overwhelming. With so many details to consider—destinations, budgets, and travel options—it's easy to get lost in the magic before even setting foot in the parks. This guide will help you confidently plan your Disney dream vacation, from choosing the perfect park to making the most of your budget.

Disneyland vs. Disney World: Where the Magic Begins

One of the first decisions you'll need to make is choosing between Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida. While both offer iconic experiences, most first-timers gravitate toward Disney World, which is the larger and more immersive of the two. Disney World is often the better choice for families seeking variety and an all-encompassing Disney experience. This is where most people take their "once-in-a-lifetime" trip.

Disney World is located in Orlando, Florida. Disney World spans more than 40 square miles and includes four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs, PGA-level golf courses, and more!

I have known more than one person. Book a trip to Disneyland without knowing the difference between the two. And lost money rebooking the travel, not to mention the hours lost in personal time. YUCK!

The Best Times to Visit the Magic (for you)

Timing is crucial when planning a Disney trip. Crowds and weather can significantly impact your experience. Here are some factors to consider when to booking your trip:

Low-Crowd Seasons: Visit during January, February, or mid-September to avoid peak crowds. These months offer shorter wait times and cooler weather. You may also encounter shorter park hours or offerings.

Holiday Magic: If you want to experience Disney's festive transformations, aim for November or early December for Christmas magic or late September through October for Halloween festivities. Disney is known for their special after-hours parties and unique experiences. If you have the chance, you will not be disappointed.

School Breaks: Families with school-aged children may need to travel during breaks. Be prepared for crowds and higher prices during these times, especially winter break. December 25 through January 1 is when Disney World will see record crowds for the year. I personally would NEVER travel during this time.

Summer Break: Words cannot describe how hot central Florida can become during the summer—Blistering. It is a deal breaker for some people. However, it is manageable if you prepare! Not to mention the daily afternoon rain storms. Major tropical storms and hurricanes may also be possible during this time.

Budgeting (based on a family of four)

There's no getting around it. Disney trips can be pricey, but careful planning ensures you maximize your budget. There is no such thing as a "Cheap" Disney trip. If you need to wait to earn additional savings to make sure you can cover all costs—do so.

Park Tickets: Expect to spend approximately $100–$150 per person daily. Multi-day passes offer better value. Disney will offer many different tickets, but for first-timers, I suggest a 1-park-per-day ticket. You will have so much to do, you will not need the fancier park-hopper tickets. This will also save you money. But honestly—you will not need the hopper option.

Accommodations: Disney is so expansive that staying off-site, even though it looks enticing to save money upfront, usually costs about the same or more. Stay on-site! Disney offers a variety of accommodations to cater to different budgets and preferences. The three main categories are Value, Moderate, and Deluxe.

  1. Value Resorts: These resorts are designed for budget-conscious travelers and provide a fun, colorful environment with themed decor. They offer amenities like comfortable rooms, pools, and food courts. Families of four can typically budget between $150–$300 per night. While these accommodations are more economical, they still provide guests with the magical Disney experience, including complimentary park transportation. We suggest Disney's Pop Century.
  2. Moderate Resorts: Offering a step up in comfort and amenities, moderate resorts often feature more spacious accommodations, bigger beds and unique themes. These resorts typically include dining options like table-service restaurants and enhanced recreational facilities and pools. Prices generally range from $250–$400 per night. Moderate resorts balance value and luxury, making them an attractive option for families seeking a more comfortable stay without going all out. We suggest Disney's Port Orleans.
  3. Deluxe Resorts: For those willing to splurge, deluxe resorts provide an upscale experience with top-notch amenities, stunning theming, exclusive character experiences and prime locations near the parks. Accommodations typically offer large rooms and high-end dining options, including signature restaurants. Most rooms may accommodate more than four people. Prices can range from $400 and up per night, and guests can enjoy added perks like concierge service, early park hours, access to front-of-the-line access, expanded transportation options, and club lounge access. Staying in a deluxe resort enhances the overall vacation experience by immersing guests in luxury while still being close to the magical moments of Disney. We suggest Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.

No matter which level you choose, staying on-site at a Disney resort enhances the overall experience, providing unique benefits and immersing you fully in the "Disney Bubble."

Dining: Budget $40–$70 per adult and $25–$40 per child per day. Disney dining plans, when available, can simplify costs but do not necessarily give you savings. It just makes things easier and more predictable. My family eats breakfast in the room, lunch in the parks and we eat a light dinner in our room again. This works best for us.

A ballpark estimate is $4,500–$5,500 for a week-long trip. (This does not include souvenirs or special experiences like a princess makeover.)

Best Way to Travel There

Flying: Flying is the quickest option if you're far from Florida. Orlando International Airport (MCO) offers the easiest access to the parks. There are also many transportation offers between the airport and Disney.

Driving: For those within driving distance, road trips allow flexibility and savings on airfare. However, most people have to drive through the dreaded city of Atlanta, GA; and pay overnight costs for a hotel on the road. (Nothing against the citizens of Atlanta, but your traffic and city planning are an absolute nightmare.)

Finding the Best Travel Package - How to Save Money

Disney often offers vacation packages which bundle accommodations, park tickets, and dining plans. These packages may save you money and simplify your planning.

Seasonal Deals: Disney frequently offers discounts on hotel stays during off-peak times. See above when these may include.

Third-Party Offers: Travel agencies and booking platforms sometimes offer exclusive deals. However, Disney rarely offers a deal through a 3rd party that is not better than what they offer directly.

Travel Specialists: For first-timers, using a Disney-certified travel specialist can help you uncover hidden savings and perks. They are a Travel Agent who book directly with Disney. They have been trained by the Mouse himself, and they stay informed with all the latest updates, news and deals.

Conclusion: Your Disney Adventure Awaits

Your first Disney trip is a journey into the extraordinary. With thoughtful planning, realistic budgeting, and the guidance of a seasoned travel specialist like Janene, you can turn your dream vacation into a magical reality. From enchanting castles to thrilling rides, the memories you create will last a lifetime. So, pack your bags, don your Mickey ears, and prepare for a trip filled with wonder and joy!
