A man by the name of Paul walks into a bookstore looking for a music book to buy to help create his next song. Paul finds the music book he is looking for. He also browses a bit more looking for a notepad to write his notes and lyrics for his new songs. He walks around the store and finds a pile of colorful books and one stands out. A little black book. No text on the outside and no text inside. Immediately Paul finds his second find. Paul is taken by the simplicity of the black book and makes his final purchase.
As Paul takes a ride home on the bus he began to write a love song about his one true love Alisa his ex-girlfriend. Paul began to write the words on the page “I wish I can see your pretty face again my love, as Paul raises his head and looks out the window to find his next set of words. He sees the love of his life Alisa walking aimlessly down the street. Paul is a bit surprised by seeing her because a year ago she went away to college and has never seen Paul again. Paul jumps off the bus but loses her in the crowd of rush-hour commuters.
Paul finds a nearby coffee house and decides to get a cup of coffee and sit and write in his black book. Pauls writes his next set of words. “I love you with my heart and soul, I will do right by you if I had another chance, just one more chance to make it right” As Paul completes that line his phone rings. He answers. It is Alisa; Paul is stunned and baffled about the coincidence of his writing and the timing of Alisa's phone call. Before Paul can get a word out Alisa over talks him explain how much she has missed him and is moving back to Chicago. Paul has never been happier in his life. He tells her how much he has missed her and the regret he felt for not moving with her when she asked. They began to make plans to meet and talk about moving forward in their rekindled relationship.
Paul realizes that everything he writes comes true but one sure way to find out is to put it to the test. Paul turns the page and writes “I will buy a winning instant lottery ticket. Paul runs to the store and buys an instant ticket. He scratches and wins a $1. Paul laughs. He then opens his black book again and writes I will buy a million-dollar ticket. Pauls buys another ticket and wins a million dollars. Everything he writes in his new book comes true. Paul now feels he can get whatever he wants in life and pauses for a minute and looks around the convenience store to see if there is anything else he wants to have. Behind the counter is a flyer that reads looking for the next songwriter/musician. Paul in the small store; tears a piece of paper out of the book and puts his book away so he won’t lose it and writes down the email on the paper from the book.
When Paul gets home he begins to write out the rest of his life. Paul writes such things as wealth into his life, love, children, many cars, vacations lots of friends, more money, and last Alisa the love of his life. As Paul is at the end of the book there are no more blank pages to write on. He now returns to the store and finds the colorful pile of books no more black books but he buys one in every color. He begins to write but none of what he writes comes true. He returns to the store once more. This time he buys all the books. Nothing at this moment Paul is content with his life and needs nothing else.
As several years go by and now Alisa the love of his life is stricken with a life-threatening illness and is told by her doctors she only has a few months to live. Paul is devastated by the news. He wishes he only could find another black book to save the love of his life. Paul searches desperately for another black book. He searches every music store, the internet but no luck. Paul then began to look in his black book for empty pages nothing so Paul starts to erase pages to write Alisa’s to be strong and healthy something he took for granted. As he began to erase the pages his life is altered. He notices the more pages he erase the more he loses and his life changes. Paul is stuck and doesn’t know what to do. Disappointed at himself for not thinking of more important things such as health and happiness instead he only thought of materialistic things. Paul began to turn the pages a piece of paper falls out. It is the page Paul tore out to write the email down to become that was on the wall at the convenience store. He breaks into tears and with plenty of space on the paper from the black book Paul began to write. “ I will give all this up only have the love of my life be happy and healthy.” Through true love, Paul's wish is granted. The black book with only one page left felt Paul's love for Alissa and written Paul’s life into an abundance of wealth, happiness, and health. Then his life became even better than the one he wrote.
