My Sister The Healer

For my best friend

Down in the busy streets of Soho a woman, Tierney McCarver, had a stack of post-its, tape and some five and single dollar bills.

She proceeded to randomly drop the notes and money around NYC for some fortunate souls to find. Each note she wrote had a different message from the universe.

As she entered her favorite spot, Chipotle, she was writing another little note with a five-dollar bill taped to it. She sat down and stared at the busy spot with contentment on her face. When she finished her taco bowl, she asked one of the workers cleaning the table next to her:

“Excuse me where is the restroom?”

The woman glared at her with disdain and annoyance on her face saying:

“Over there” not even pointing.

“Thank you” Tierney says, and looks around for herself.

As she is standing in the line she found, Tierney is a tad put off by the rudeness when she hears the same woman say:

“Excuse me, excuse me miss”

Tierney glances up at the worker who has surprise on her previously disgruntled face.

“Did you leave this here?”

Tierney smiles saying yes she did. With tears in her eyes the woman says:

“This is the nicest thing someone’s done for me”

Tierney nodded kindly to the woman. The note with the five-dollar bill attached to it read:

“You are abundant”

And just like that two hearts opened.

My sister is a healer. That experience occurred last summer when she came to New York City to visit me.

She is my best friend, we have been close our entire lives. Everyone says we are just alike...except she’s nicer! I laugh because it’s true. She gives and she gives freely. She is a Pranic Healer, PSYCH- K Facilitator and a massage therapist. Her commitment to her spiritual wellness inspires me on a daily basis.

Oh she’s no Saint. Lets be real and accept each other’s humanness. She is someone willing to grow along spiritual lines. Someone who can take a deep dive and really look at herself. Admit when she’s wrong and PRACTICE changing her behavior and beliefs one day at a time.

In turn she helps guide others to do the same. She is someone who remains teachable. That is an attractive quality. A quality that reminds me of where I can bend, where I can give, where I can receive and where I can be of service. We were taught that we are all students and teachers at the same time.

Among many things, Tierney taught me to compost in order to put back into the earth. She has a bin in her yard. The obvious thought for me was “I live in the city while you have space.”

Here’s the thing: she goes the extra couple of steps to do good because that is what she believes. It’s not easy or convenient for her to do it. In fact now she drives the giant bin to the compost site weekly as it has gotten too much for her yard.

Well I guess that showed me. I now compost and yes I have to carry my bags on specific days to the sites in NYC. Yet I take the extra steps because someone showed me what a small act could do.

She has done away with napkins and paper towels. The majority of her home in Maine has reusable everything! She even makes her own soap and essentail oils for healing, including hair products.

Let me tell you something. She is a mother of a three year old, a wife, a business owner and she works two days at a recovery center to supplement her income while she is building her business.

Is she Super Woman? No. That is unrealistic and paints a pretty hard act to follow.

What she does is one seemingly small act at a time to where now it’s an ebb and flow because this is the way she chooses to live. This did not happen overnight. And that is important to know. I have watched her grow and change. She makes adjustments and lives by them.

Tierney leads by example.

A great example she has set. She is kind and loving. I watch her drop everything after a busy day to give a hundred percent attention to her son. Maybe he wants to throw a sock, well, she is right there to give him all the love that flows through her.

She teaches me what is possible, she teaches me synchronicity, she teaches me the importance of energy and where to use it. The energy and internal love for ourselves that comes first and then we have the ability to put that out into the world.

I have eternal love for My Sister the Healer.
