My Journey as a Single Mom: How I Balanced Parenting and Entrepreneurship
Being a single mom and an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. It’s a constant juggle between business deadlines and bedtime stories, client meetings and school drop-offs and let's not forget self-care! When I started my journey, I often wondered: "Can I really do it all?" The answer? Yes, but it takes strategic planning, resilience, and a whole lot of coffee!
If you’re a single mom dreaming of starting (or growing) a business while raising kids, I want to share my journey and the key lessons that helped me succeed. Follow these steps, and you, too, can build a thriving business without sacrificing precious moments with your children.
1. Ditch the Guilt : You Can’t Do It All, and That’s Okay!
One of my biggest struggles was mom guilt feeling like I wasn’t doing enough for my child or my business. But I learned an important lesson:
"Being a great mom doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. It means doing your best with what you have."
📌 Action Step: Accept that some days, you’ll be a rockstar in business, and other days, you’ll just be an awesome mom. Balance isn’t perfection, it’s prioritizing what matters most each day.
2. Create a Flexible, Realistic Schedule
Time is a single mom’s most valuable asset, so I became obsessed with time management. I structured my work hours around my child’s routine, working early mornings, during naps, or after bedtime.
📌 Action Step: Plan your day with a simple time-blocking method:
✔ Morning: Self-care + kid time
✔ Daytime: Work + household tasks
✔ Evening: Quality time with your child
✔ Night: Work on business strategy
Use tools like Google Calendar, Trello, or a simple planner to stay on track!
3. Set Boundaries (Yes, Even with Your Kids!)
At first, my child didn’t understand why “Mommy is working” meant she couldn’t play with me 24/7. But I introduced a simple system:
👉 Mommy’s Work Time = Focus Time (with small breaks for hugs & snacks)
👉 Mommy’s Free Time = Full Attention on My Child
📌 Action Step: Create a visual sign (like a “Mommy’s Working” board) for kids old enough to understand. This teaches independence and patience!
4. Automate, Delegate, and Simplify Your Business
I quickly realized: I can’t do it all in my business alone. I automated tasks like:
✔ Social media scheduling (use Canva or Later)
✔ Customer inquiries (set up email templates)
✔ Finances (use QuickBooks or Wave)
📌 Action Step: If you can afford help, outsource! Hire a virtual assistant for admin tasks, or use platforms like Fiverr and Upwork to lighten your load.
5. Find Your Support System: You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
As a single mom, I thought I had to handle everything alone. But asking for help isn’t weakness, it’s smart! Whether it's family, friends, or a community of mompreneurs, having support makes all the difference.
📌 Action Step: Join Facebook groups, online forums, or local mompreneur meetups. Surround yourself with people who uplift you!
6. Prioritize Self-Care : A Burnt-Out Mom Can’t Run a Business
Running a business AND raising a child is mentally and physically exhausting. At one point, I was so drained that I realized:
"If I don’t take care of myself, I can’t take care of my child or my business."
📌 Action Step: Schedule non-negotiable self-care time even if it’s just 15 minutes of meditation, a cup of tea, or a short workout. A happy, healthy mom = a thriving business!
7. Take Action – Start Small and Grow from There
The biggest mistake I see aspiring mompreneurs make? Waiting for the “perfect time.” There is no perfect time you have to start with what you have, where you are.
📌 Action Step: Pick one small goal today whether it’s starting a website, posting on social media, or reaching out to your first client and TAKE ACTION.
Final Thoughts : You Are Stronger Than You Think
If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey, it’s that being a single mom and an entrepreneur requires a unique kind of strength. It’s a balancing act of meeting deadlines while making dinner, answering client calls while helping with homework, and pushing through exhaustion to keep your dreams alive.
There were days when I wanted to give up, days when the challenges felt too big, the exhaustion too overwhelming, and the self-doubt too loud. But every time I looked at my child, I remembered why I started. I wasn’t just building a business, I was building a future for both of us. A future where I could be financially independent, present for my child, and proud of what I had accomplished.
If you’re reading this and feeling overwhelmed, let me tell you something: You are capable of more than you know.
✔ You have the resilience to push through obstacles.
✔ You have the creativity to make things work, even when it seems impossible.
✔ You have the heart of a mother and the mind of an entrepreneur and that combination is unstoppable.
The key to success isn’t doing everything perfectly, it’s doing what you can, with what you have, where you are.
💡 Remember This:
Some days will feel chaotic, but you are still making progress.
Your child doesn’t need a perfect mom, they need a happy and fulfilled one.
Success doesn’t happen overnight, but every small step you take today brings you closer to your dream.
So take a deep breath. Give yourself grace. And keep going. Because one day, your child will look back and say, "My mom did all of this, and she never gave up." And that will be worth everything.
Now, go out there and build the life you and your child deserve. You’ve got this! 💖✨
