"Love Beyond Sight: A Wife’s Beautiful Goodbye"
They were both classmates. The girl was the most beautiful in the entire university, and the boy was the most handsome among all the boys. They kept bumping into each other and eventually fell in love. It was a Romeo and Juliet kind of situation. Their families hated each other, and marriage seemed impossible. Both were obedient children from respectable families. They were not willing to elope, and neither family was ready to compromise its honor. So, the matter got stuck.
The boy and girl decided never to marry anyone else. They stayed in their respective homes, with no contact between them for five years. Their parents kept trying to get them married elsewhere, but they always refused. Eventually, the girl’s parents gave up. She called the boy. He answered the phone, heard just her “hello,” and said, “Tell me, when should I bring the wedding procession?” Their parents met, the wedding took place, and they started their married life.
The boy started a business, and by the grace of God, they became prosperous. Their marriage lasted for twenty years, during which they had three children. The woman took great pride in her beauty — and rightly so. Even at 45 and as the mother of three, she still looked young. Her husband adored her just as he had on day one and praised her wholeheartedly every day.
But then one day, the unthinkable happened. A small lump appeared on her skin, which kept growing and eventually became cancerous. They consulted doctors, had tests done, and found out she had skin cancer.
The husband wasn’t just a husband; he was her Majnun. He could tear open his thigh to feed her meat, if needed. He took her to every doctor and clinic across the world. They traveled from one doctor to another, one country to the next, until the doctors finally gave up. Her body became filled with lumps.
As if this wasn’t enough, another tragedy struck. Her husband’s car collided with a truck, and he was severely injured. When he reached the hospital, it was discovered that he had lost his eyesight.
Now imagine this tragedy — the city’s most beautiful couple: the wife suffering from skin cancer and the husband blind. People would look at them and shake their heads in sorrow. But still, they were content. Every morning, they would walk together in the garden, go to the cinema, and eat at restaurants. The wife would hold his hand and guide him, and he would follow her lead.
This continued for several months. But then, one day, the wife made a strange request. She wanted to go alone to Switzerland. The husband asked why. She said she needed ten or fifteen days alone. The husband insisted on accompanying her, but she refused. The arguments continued until eventually, as in such cases, the husband gave in.
She went to Switzerland. The husband spent those ten days in great distress. In twenty years of marriage, they had never been apart for even a single day. These were their first ten days of separation — days that felt like mountains crushing him. He was tormented beneath this emotional mountain.
The wife was supposed to return after ten days. The husband went to the airport — but she didn’t arrive. He felt the earth sway beneath him. He kept calling her all day, but couldn’t reach her. That evening, a letter from his wife arrived. Their son read it aloud. But the letter wasn’t just a letter — it was a written catastrophe, and the entire family was devastated by it.
Before we get to that catastrophe, let me tell you about a terrifying yet fascinating reality of this world.
There are countless centers in the world where people can choose to die willingly. These centers are made for terminally ill patients. When people become exhausted from carrying the burden of their illness and wish to die peacefully, they go to these centers. They present their medical reports; doctors assess their condition and verify their reports. Then, the patients sign a declaration: “We are choosing to leave this world of our own free will.” They are given a date and time for their death. Their last wishes are fulfilled, and then, with the help of compassionate doctors and nurses, they are given a lethal injection and peacefully pass away.
This process is called euthanasia, or mercy killing. It is legal in seven countries, and being debated in as many others. Switzerland is one of the countries where euthanasia is legal. In Zurich, there is a euthanasia center located in a stunningly beautiful place. The rooms are built beside mountains, waterfalls, and lakes.
Patients lie on their beds, watching the last mornings and evenings of their lives — and then, in the hands of gentle doctors and nurses, they cross the boundary of life.
That woman had also gone to Switzerland for euthanasia. She could no longer bear the pain of cancer, so she decided to choose a peaceful death. She went to Zurich, spent her last ten days, and chose to die at the exact moment her return flight was supposed to land. As the plane landed back home, she crossed the threshold of life.
Her final letter was in the hands of her son, who was sobbing as he read it. The husband sat with his head bowed, listening to every word.
In the letter, she recounted her entire life. She described how she felt the first time they met at university, why she used to argue with him, and the day she fell in love during one of those arguments. She told how she endured the five years of separation and why, even after marriage, she kept the children in the care of servants — “I couldn’t divide my love. I couldn’t even give your share to our children.”
She wrote about the joy of their twenty-year marriage, and how she felt when the first lump appeared. How she watched herself become uglier each day, and how much it hurt her. She tolerated even that. But then something strange happened.
“You sent the children to boarding school. I knew why you did that. You didn’t want them to see me in this condition, nor did you want me to see pity in their eyes.
Then you started bribing the servants to break a mirror every day. I’d ask you to get them replaced, but you would laugh it off. Gradually, all the mirrors disappeared from the house. You didn’t want me to see my own ugliness.
If it had ended there, I might have endured it. But then you did something strange — you had an accident and pretended to be blind. I know your eyes are fine. You’ve been faking blindness for the past six months. And I know why.
You didn’t want me to feel, even for a moment, that you could see my ugliness. You didn’t want me to read it in your eyes. So, you chose to become blind. Your fake blindness was the ultimate expression of love — and I couldn’t bear that level of love.
So, I decided to leave this world. I’m going. Please stop pretending to be blind now. Take this letter and start reading it yourself.”
At this point, the son screamed. The father took the letter from his hand and began reading it aloud.
“Please take care of yourself after I’m gone. All the towels are in the cupboard. I’ve given the tailor five years’ worth of clothes. He’ll send you ten new outfits every year — you must wear them until they’re worn out. Keep getting your teeth checked, never skip your morning walk, and lastly, don’t forget to feed the birds daily and always take care of my cats.”
Conclusion:
Their love was not measured by time, but by sacrifice. He chose darkness so she would never see her fading beauty through his eyes, and she chose silence to preserve his dignity. In a world full of conditions, they loved unconditionally. Her final letter revealed the depth of their bond—a love that stayed strong beyond illness, beyond pain, and even beyond life. Their story reminds us that true love is not about holding on, but knowing when to let go. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next story.
