We all want the happy ending. The prince in shiny armor. The dragon slayer. The beautiful princess awaiting to be saved. The magic. The fantasy. The dreams. This is what we desire our lives to be like. To open our stories find our pages and read them outloud. We want a fantasy. But unfortunately that’s what all that is, a fantasy.

fan·ta·sy

/ˈfan(t)əsē/

noun

1. the faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable

We wish for the things that are impossible. Things of our incredible imaginations. We find ways to imagine what things could be but never have been. How can we have dragon slayers when dragons are only a fragment of our imagination.

im·ag·i·na·tion

/iˌmajəˈnāSH(ə)n/

1. the faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses.

The images we see within our minds create these vivid scenes. The wings of the dragon spreading wide before leaping into the sky. Fire breathing out of it’s nostrils as it soars over the enemies home. We see them but we reach out and can’t obtain them because of the reality that they are not real. We were taught as kids to play make believe. We were encouraged to imagine things that weren’t there. We became great adventures and explorers in lands that no one had ever been before. We would make great discoveries.

dis·cov·er·y

/dəˈskəv(ə)rē/

1. the action or process of discovering or being discovered.

We were so proud of ourselves for all of the worlds we had conquered. The places we had been. The enemies we had conquered.

As a child these three words define our playtimes.

Fantasy. Imagination. Discovery.

Without these things are brains wouldn’t fully develope. We would be stuck in a world that didn’t make sense. We would lose the sense of entertainment and enjoyment. Without our imaginations the world would be black and white and unexciting.

Fantasy is what stories are made from. We all enjoy a great fantasy book or movie. When we’ve had a long day sometimes all we need is a good story to distract us from everything that had taken place that day.

Imagination is what brings those stories to life. Without imagination that dragon would never be able to fly. The knight would never have a beautiful princess to save and your fairy dust would just fall to the ground never helping Wendy to fly.

Discovery is how we find new stories. We don’t just repeat the same thing over and over. We learn and create new worlds to explore. We can craft new things and become more independent in our thinking. We can discover what life is and imagine what life could be.

In conclusion we are created to be creative. This creative spark appears in our lives through our imagination. We have this in ourselves from a young age. Sometimes life can blow out our spark of imagination or somethings life causes it to thrive. What has life given you? Have you grown your creativity or have you let that candle be blown out? No matter where you are in life you can find a new burst of imagination and creativity. You are not in this life alone. Go out and create like a child.
