Little box, big surprise.
A story about the scarlet macaw.
The sand is so cold at night, I can feel it through my bare feet. I went out for a walk, very close to the place where I work and live, in the distance I could see two strange figures, which seemed to be doing something. I putted my shoes on and approached stealthily since it is rare to see something like this at this time, on the edge of the beach. The shadows disappeared into the darkness of the night, leaving something on the ground, apparently not buried enough in the sand. I waited for them to leave the place before approaching, I could feel the fear that people had, they shouted at each other as they buried that thing that seemed to be a small box.
Something was wrong, curiosity was killing me, I wanted to go investigate but I felt afraid about that box. Suddenly the box started shaking, I approached carefully and grabbed the box between my hands and started to open it. A scream came from inside the box so I decided to break it, even though it was well sealed. Inside was an injured bird, to be specific a scarlet macaw.
when I saw it I inmediately ran to my car, which was a little bit far from the place I found the featherly friend, which I took between my hands and putted it on the seat at my side. I drove as fast as I could to the nearest veterinary hospital I saw. I went inside, talked to the secretary and told me she would tell the doctor as soon as possible to check the bird, which seemed like it had suffered animal abuse. while waiting for the doctor to call us I searched on internet about the scarlet macaw and I saw it is an endagered of extintion species.
When we entered the vet's office he began to ask me many questions, since it seemed very strange that a bird classified in danger of extinction is in such bad condition, injured and dirty. I explained to the vet that I had just found him on the beach leaving the store where I work, he believed my story and he told me that he would help me financially with all the care that the bird needs, as long as I promise to release it as soon as it is in the condition to go, he also mentioned that it was a male bird. His wing was broken and had spaces on his body without feathers, the vet gave me a packet of gauze for the wing and medicines and ointments so that he can heal completely.
We went out from the vet's office, then I went back to my car and put the bird on the seat next to me, I spent ten minutes looking at it thinking what will I do next, If i should buy a cage, food, a bed or toys; the bird looked back at me and started to make little sounds and whistles, I saw it and I putted my hand next to him, trying to pet him. He closed his eyes, maybe it thought that I was going to hit him, but instead I petted him.
In that moment, I felt that I needed to help him, so I drove to a pet store, I left the bird inside the car with the air conditioner on to avoid questions, I went inside and asked the cashier which supplies did I needed for a bird, that it was the first time I had a bird at home and I didnt know what to buy. She took me to the bird section and recommend me food, treats, toys and a cage for birds. I didnt want to buy him a cage, in case he had suffered some trauma, so I bought a stuffed house for dog instead, which seem to be so soft inside.
I drove back home, where I settled his things; I left the box with the bird inside on the floor and his new stuff at its side, waiting for him to come outside by himself. At the beginning, he was quiet and paralyzed inside it, but then he suddenly decided to come outside and look around the place.
After that day, we've been friends, I feed him, play with him, talk to him and more, but sadly today he will go back to nature, as I promised the vet i'll do, because he needs to be free like the other birds. Today my little friend will return to be a wild bird, I decided to give it to the society of animals of endangered species, they promise to take him to the Amazonas and free him there.
While I was driving to the place, my bird was singing a lubally from a song of Bob Marley, named "Everything's gonna be alright", I started crying, because for me it was too difficult to say goodbye to him, so I told him there's nothing to worry about, that soon he would go where he belongs to and that I'll never forget him and how good bird he was. He saw me and said "I love you" in a weird voice, I couldn't be happier in that moment.
When we arrived to the place, the people in charge of him started to pet him and they took him to a cage, a big cage with water and food, they showed me that they'll be ready to leave in 20 minutes, and that I was able to say goodbye to the bird. I look at him and I said "have a good trip, my friend'' and saw how they moved the cage inside the plane.
