Jeffrey Koistinen’s: Finding Strength After Losing His Beloved Son Liam

Watertown, SD — In a heartbreaking turn of events, Jeffrey Koistinen & his family mourn the loss of their beloved Liam Jeffrey Koistinen, a vibrant and joyful 17-month-old, who passed away on July 14, 2021, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. A bright light extinguished too soon, Liam's passing has left an indelible mark on his family and community, stirring a wave of grief and calls for justice.

Liam was born on February 1, 2020, in Tucson, AZ, to Jeff and Genevie (Suyu) Koistinen. A miracle baby from the start, Liam overcame a problematic birth, spending two weeks in the NICU before coming home to fill his family's lives with laughter and joy. His infectious belly laugh and boundless curiosity became hallmarks of his personality. Jeffrey Koistinen said Liam loved cars and trucks, calling out "car" every morning. He was fascinated by exploring the world around him, including pressing buttons and commandeering his dad's remote control.

Funeral services were held on July 21, 2021, at New Life Evangelical Free Church in Watertown, SD, and were live-streamed for those unable to attend. Liam's final resting place is at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Instead of flowers, the family requested memorial donations to Midwest Bible Camp, supporting children's missionary work in the Philippines, a cause close to their hearts due to Genevie's heritage.

However, the joy of Liam's life was cut short under devastating circumstances. During the Koistinen family's summer visit to Watertown, Liam was placed in the care of an unlicensed daycare provider, Amanda Walder, who now faces felony charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and aggravated battery of an infant. According to authorities, Liam suffered a brain bleed and swelling after enduring alleged abuse while in her care.

The tragedy unfolded on July 14 when Walder contacted the family, reporting that Liam was unresponsive after being put down for a nap. Despite emergency medical efforts, Liam succumbed to his injuries, which medical experts determined were consistent with abuse. This revelation has left the Koistinen family and many in the community grappling with profound sorrow and anger.

Liam's father, Jeffrey Koistinen, recalls troubling signs in the weeks leading up to his son's passing. Liam exhibited distress during drop-offs and appeared uneasy as they approached Walder's home. The family now reflects on these moments with heartache, wishing they had understood the depth of Liam's fear.

"He was our world," said Jeff. "Liam's laughter and curiosity brought us endless joy. To lose him in such a manner is unbearable."

As the legal process unfolds, the Koistinen family advocates for greater awareness of childcare safety and the risks of unlicensed daycare providers. They hope Liam's story will inspire parents to trust their instincts and prioritize transparency and accountability in childcare arrangements.

Liam's life, though brief, was filled with love, laughter, and boundless potential. His legacy lives on through his family's advocacy and the cherished memories they hold dear. The Koistinen family asks for continued prayers and support as they navigate this profound loss.
