If I Win AppSumo's $100K, I'll Use 25% to Bring Clean Water to My Community.
What does clean water mean to you—convenience or survival?

Where I come from, water isn’t just water. It’s hope, health, and survival wrapped into one precious drop. Growing up in Kakola, a village tucked away in Kisumu County, Kenya, I watched families wake up before dawn to fetch water.
Women balanced heavy jerricans on their heads while children missed school to make the long, arduous journey. This wasn’t water for luxury—it was for basic survival. The water they brought back wasn’t safe, but there was no other choice.
This reality hasn’t changed for many in Kakola. Dirty water causes illnesses like typhoid and cholera, while the high salinity of our local water sources leads to long-term health issues. Brown teeth, due to excess fluoride, skin dries out, and kidneys work overtime to process what should sustain life.
It breaks my heart to see children suffer from problems clean water could prevent.
When I heard about AppSumo’s $100K Black Friday competition, I saw more than just an opportunity—a solution. If I win, I’ll use 25% of the prize money to bring clean, safe water to Kakola.
The Plan: A Solar-Powered Solution
My idea centers around an off-grid water system powered by solar energy. It’s a game-changer for Kakola, where power outages are common, and fuel costs are too high to sustain traditional systems. A solar-powered setup ensures the project runs smoothly without recurring costs that might make clean water unaffordable for the community.
The heart of the project is a reverse osmosis system. This technology filters out 96–99% of impurities, including harmful bacteria, viruses, and excess salts. Paired with solar panels, the system cleans the water and ensures sustainability.
The funds would cover drilling a borehole, setting up the reverse osmosis purification unit, installing solar panels, and building a small distribution system. The project would also include a storage tank to ensure water is available throughout the day.
A Vision for Community Impact
This isn’t just about clean water but empowering my community. When families no longer have to worry about where their next bucket of water will come from, they can focus on education, health, and building a brighter future.
I picture children heading to school instead of carrying jerricans. I see women using their time for income-generating activities instead of spending hours walking to unsafe water sources. I imagine a Kakola where fewer kids end up in clinics because of waterborne diseases.
Clean water can also bring peace. In areas where resources are scarce, tensions often run high. This project could reduce conflicts and unite people by providing a reliable water source.
Why 25% of $100K is Good Enough for a Start
With $25,000, I can kick-start the AppSumo-Kakola Off-Grid Community Water Project. Here’s how I’d allocate the funds:
Hydro-Hydrogeological Survey and Environmental Impact Assessment: $1,500
Borehole Drilling and Setup: $10,000
Reverse Osmosis Unit: $8,000
Solar Panel Installation: $5,000
Community Training and Management: $500
This budget would cover the essentials, but the impact it creates would be immeasurable.
Scaling the Vision
Once the project is up and running, it can serve as a blueprint for other communities facing similar challenges. Clean water isn’t just a need in Kakola—it’s a global issue. This project could inspire more significant initiatives across Kenya and beyond by proving that a small, localized solution can work.
The AppSumo Connection

What excites me most about this opportunity is its alignment with AppSumo’s values. The brand has always championed creators and innovators; this project blends innovation with social good. It’s a chance to show how a global brand can make a tangible difference in a rural community.
I’d proudly brand the project as the AppSumo-Kakola Off-Grid Community Water Project, displaying their logo on the purification unit, storage tanks, and solar panels. This isn’t just about thanking AppSumo—it’s about showing how their support turns dreams into reality.
Clean Water is Just the Start
This project isn’t a standalone effort. It’s part of a bigger dream to transform Kakola into a thriving community. Clean water offers better health, more robust education, and economic opportunities.
Imagine a small marketplace springing up around the water source, with women selling goods made during the hours they no longer spend fetching water. Picture kids excelling in school because they’re no longer sick from waterborne diseases. Visualize a community united by the shared pride of managing a resource that benefits everyone.
The Water Project and the UN Sustainable Development Goals
The proposed AppSumo-Kakola Water Project aligns closely with six critical UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing how clean water can drive progress across various areas of life:
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Clean water reduces waterborne diseases and long-term health problems like kidney overload and hypertension, improving overall well-being and reducing healthcare costs.
Goal 5: Gender Equality
Reliable access to water eases the burden on women and girls, freeing them to pursue education, work, and leadership opportunities, promoting equality and empowerment.
Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
By providing safe drinking water for over 4,000 people, the project ensures sustainable water management and access for a community in need.
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
The solar-powered water purification system eliminates reliance on expensive and polluting fuel, ensuring affordability and environmental sustainability.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Reliable access to water builds healthier, more resilient communities, reducing resource conflicts and fostering social cohesion.
Goal 13: Climate Action
Solar energy and eco-friendly practices reduce the environmental impact of water systems while contributing to climate resilience through greenery and soil protection.
This project demonstrates how a single initiative can address multiple global challenges, improving lives while building a sustainable future.
Why I’m Sharing This: A Dream Worth Backing
I’m sharing my vision not just for the chance to win AppSumo’s $100K prize but to ignite hope and action. Whether I win or not, I want this story to prove that small steps can spark incredible change. Clean water isn’t a luxury—it’s a fundamental human right.
Imagine the lives transformed when Kakola gains access to clean, safe water. Children will stay in school, women will reclaim their time, and families will thrive. This project isn’t just about water—it’s about health, dignity, and a brighter future for my community.
If you are reading this story, share it widely and tag people or organizations that believe in initiatives like this. If this vision moves you, I would like to invite you to support it. Together, we can create a ripple effect of change that starts in Kakola and spreads far beyond.
Clean water gives life, but in Kakola, it can provide so much more. It can give health, time, and the promise of a better tomorrow. With your help, we can make this a reality.
This is a prize worth working for and a dream worth backing!
