Situated along the picturesque coastline of Thailand, Hua Hin is a favourite among holidaygoers seeking a respite from Bangkok's busy streets. With its family friendly beaches, delicious cuisine, and endless activities, build the perfect vacation itinerary, enjoyable for both kids and adults alike.

Getting To Hua Hin

One of Hua Hin's biggest advantages is its proximity to Bangkok. Located just about 200 kilometres from the capital, you can reach Hua Hin in around two and a half hours by car or bus, through scenic coastal roads winding south. The drive promises stunning views, and the chance to stop at various points of interest. Train travel is another ideal option for getting to your Hua Hin family resort, as the town is well-connected via the country's state railway, with frequent services from Bangkok. Much like intercity train travel in the capital, the journey is fairly comfortable aboard Express Train 43, with the added bonus of passing through the quaint Thai countryside.

As one of the oldest resort towns in Thailand, Hua Hin is also home to a wide range of family-friendly resorts, hotels and guesthouses. Many of these resorts feature kid-friendly amenities and activities to help the little ones stay busy, from kids' clubs and swimming pools to direct beach access. Some popular resorts offer inclusive family packages that make planning your stay a little easier, like complimentary learning activities and toys through AvaniKids, available for guests staying at Avani+ Hua Hin Resort.

With that in mind, consider bringing swimwear, light clothing for the weather, and plenty of sun protection. Most of the best activities in Hua Hin for families are outdoors, so sunscreen above SPF 30+, hats and insect repellent are essentials for a fun and safe vacation. For any temple visits and cultural excursions, consider bringing modest clothing or shawls to cover the knees and shoulders.

Water Parks & Water Sports

Blessed with a tropical climate, sunny skies and long stretches of shoreline, Hua Hin offers a range of water parks and water sports to cool off from the heat. The town is home to two major water parks, both beloved by visitors from all over. Black Mountain Water Park, the oldest in Hua Hin is a must-visit, featuring a collection of exciting slides, a lazy river, infinity pool, water obstacle course and one of the largest wave pools in the country. Although the wave pool and some of the bigger slides might not be suitable for younger children, the park's play houses and adventure pool can keep the little ones occupied for hours. The park also offers free shuttle rides to and from town.

Similarily, Vana Nava Water Jungle, Thailand's first "water jungle", is a newer, yet equally exciting park, combining thrilling water rides with the lush, tropical landscape. In addition to the high-speed slides and wave pool, the park also hosts several other activities, such as surf simulators, perfect for older children looking to catch some waves.

Conveniently enough, many resorts in Hua Hin also offer a variety of water sports and activities, particularly those located along Hua Hin's iconic beachfront. Families can enjoy paddleboarding or even kite surfing, while younger guests can have a fantastic time at the resort's kids club.

Craft Markets & Street Food Adventures

For a taste of local culture, the Hua Hin Night Market is a must-visit. Open every evening, this famous street market offers a wide range of food stalls, souvenirs, and local crafts. Introduce the kids to the delicious world of Thai street food, and let your kids experiment with a variety of familiar, and unfamiliar flavours; from grilled seafood and Chinese barbecue, to refreshing desserts like shaved ice topped with jellies and condensed milk.

Another popular cultural spot is Cicada Market, known for its of handicrafts and creative souvenirs. Open during weekends, this market is a showcase of local artists and artisans — families can find unique handmade crafts, clothing, and art pieces, while enjoying live music and performances, making it a great post dinner outing for everybody.

Wildlife & Nature

Just along the outskirts of Hua Hin, explore the great outdoors, and discover the natural wonders of the region. One of the best places to visit for nature enthusiasts, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park is known for stunning limestone hills, marshes, and beaches, habitats that are home to a variety of wildlife. This natural landscape was established as the first coastal national park in Thailand, and is best explored by bicycle, as there is a significant distance between attractions. However, families can still hike through scenic trails, explore caves, and spot endemic animals and rare birds, including dusky leaf monkeys, Sam Roi Yot bent-toed geckos, and the adorable Baer's Pochard diving ducks. The park also offers boat tours, the best way to appreciate the beauty of the coastline and its diverse ecosystem.

Another unique experience is paying a visit to the Wildlife Friends Foundation (WFFT) Thai Elephant Refuge. This ethical sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of elephants, advocating for these gentle creatures and fighting against poaching and using animals for entertainment. Located an hour north from Hua Hin, families can learn about elephant conservation, feed the elephants, and even participate in their care. This heartwarming experience not only entertains, but also educates visitors about wildlife protection.
