Grandma’s Rainbow Princess Story

BY: Ubaid

It was evening, the time when laughter and excitement filled the house. The children had just finished dinner, and instead of fighting over games or quarreling for the TV remote as they usually did, they all ran straight into Grandma’s room. Their sudden rush surprised the adults who watched in amazement.

“What has gotten into them?” whispered an uncle.

Grandma chuckled softly. “This is the magic of stories. Children had almost forgotten the joy of listening to tales. They were drifting far away from nature and imagination. But ever since I started telling them stories, they have begun to return to that world. Now, they look forward to it every single evening.”

As soon as Grandma entered her room, the children were already waiting like an eager little army. They clapped and cheered, “Grandma, which story will you tell us today? Tell us, Grandma, which story?”

Smiling warmly, she said, “Tonight, my dear children, I will tell you the story of the Rainbow Princess.”

All the children echoed in excitement, “The Rainbow Princess!”

“Yes,” Grandma continued, “The story of Princess Dhanak.”

And so, she began.

The Rainbow Princess

“This is the story of a little girl named Alia. She was the most beloved child in her family. Everyone adored her, and because she loved rainbows more than anything else, everyone called her Princess Dhanak—the Rainbow Princess.

But today was her birthday, and she was very upset. She had woken up with great excitement, expecting her family to shower her with birthday wishes and gifts. Yet, to her disappointment, nobody said a word. Not her parents, not her siblings. She felt invisible.

‘Maybe they’ve forgotten my birthday,’ she thought sadly.

At breakfast, still no one mentioned her special day. When she went to school, she hoped her friends would remember. But even there, no one congratulated her. Alia’s heart grew heavy. She whispered to herself, Does nobody love me?

After school, she visited her grandmother’s house. Surely her grandmother would remember. But again, silence. No hugs, no gifts, no birthday wishes. The little Rainbow Princess spent the entire day feeling lonely and unloved.”

A Pause for Curiosity

At this point, little Bushra interrupted Grandma. “But Grandma, what does dhanak mean?”

Grandma smiled. “Dhanak is another word for rainbow, my dear. In English, we call it a rainbow. It is made of seven colors—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. When sunlight passes through raindrops in the sky, the light bends and breaks into these seven colors, forming a beautiful arch. Scientists say a rainbow isn’t really there in the sky—it depends on where you are standing and how the light reaches your eyes.

And do you know who proved that white light is made of these seven colors? It was Sir Isaac Newton!”

The children widened their eyes in wonder.

“I want to see a rainbow!” shouted Aqeel.

“You can’t see it all the time,” Grandma explained patiently. “A rainbow usually appears when one part of the sky is still cloudy after rain, while the other part is clear with sunlight. But remember, it depends on your position too. Not everyone can see the same rainbow.”

Minnah frowned. “So when will we see one, Grandma?”

Arham piped up, “Can I wake up early in the morning and see one?”

Before Grandma could answer, Zainab giggled. “Yes, Arham! You’ll be the Rainbow Prince.” The room filled with laughter.

Back to the Princess

Bushra reminded Grandma, “But Grandma, what happened to Princess Dhanak’s birthday?”

Grandma resumed, her eyes twinkling.

“Alia remained quiet the whole day, her heart aching. She thought, No one cares for me. No one loves me anymore. She decided she wouldn’t talk to anyone again.

But when evening came, her uncle took her back home. As soon as she opened the door, she froze in shock. The house was glowing with lights. Balloons hung in every corner, and colorful ribbons decorated the walls. Her cousins, grandparents, friends, and family were all waiting inside.

The moment she stepped in, everyone shouted together:

‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RAINBOW PRINCESS!’

Tears filled Alia’s eyes. She had been sad all day, not knowing that everyone was secretly preparing a surprise.

On the table stood the most beautiful cake she had ever seen. And on top of it was a rainbow—seven colors shining brightly, just like her nickname.

In that moment, all her sadness vanished. She realized that her family had not forgotten at all. In fact, they loved her so much that they wanted to give her a day she would never forget.”

The Children’s Delight

Bushra clapped her hands. “Grandma, you must celebrate my birthday like that too!”

Everyone laughed.

Arham exclaimed, “I just want to see a real rainbow one day. Next time it rains, I’m going to look for it!”

“Yes, me too!” chorused the other children.

Grandma smiled with deep satisfaction. She was happy not only because they enjoyed the story, but also because the children were learning to love nature again. They were starting to notice the wonders around them—rainbows, rain, light, and the mysteries of the world.

“Now, my little ones,” she said, “it’s very late. Time to go to sleep.”

The children hugged her one by one and left the room, still chattering about rainbows and birthday surprises.

As Grandma watched them go, her heart felt full. The world outside might forget the beauty of nature, but in her room, through her stories, a new love for wonder was being born.
