"In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"
The Quran emphasizes the importance of treating parents with kindness, respect, and obedience. It encourages believers to honor their parents and fulfill their rights. Here are a few verses from the Quran that highlight the teachings regarding parents:
Surah Al-Isra (17:23): "And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word."
This verse emphasizes the obligation to treat parents with utmost kindness and respect, even if they reach old age and require care.
Surah Al-Ankabut (29:8): "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do."
This verse advises believers to be dutiful and kind to their parents. However, if parents encourage their children to associate partners with Allah or engage in wrongful actions, the children should not obey them in those matters.
Surah Luqman (31:14): "And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination."
This verse highlights the gratitude children should have towards their parents, particularly acknowledging the hardships the mother goes through during pregnancy and childbirth.
Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:15): "And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, 'My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.'"
This verse highlights the stages of human development and emphasizes the importance of being grateful to parents for their efforts and seeking righteousness in one's actions.
Overall, the Quran teaches that respecting and honoring parents is a fundamental duty for believers. The obligation extends to providing care, showing gratitude, and treating parents with kindness and respect throughout their lives. However, obedience should be balanced with maintaining the principles of Islam if there is a conflict between parental desires and the teachings of the religion.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83): "And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing."
This verse mentions that one of the commandments given to the Children of Israel was to be good and kind to their parents, highlighting the universal nature of this obligation.
Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:17): "But those who deny the truth say to their parents, 'You promise us that we will return [to life] and be brought forth [from the earth] once we have turned into bones and decayed matter? This is certainly nothing but ancient legends!'"
This verse warns against disrespect and disbelief towards parents, emphasizing that rejecting their teachings and beliefs is an act of ingratitude.
This verse also highlights the supplication of a person who, upon reaching maturity, acknowledges the blessings of Allah and seeks to be grateful to both Allah and their parents.
These verses, among others, emphasize the importance of treating parents with kindness, respect, and obedience, while also acknowledging the role of parents in providing care, guidance, and nurturing throughout one's life.
