A Father's Letters to a World of Orphans

A story to represent my beliefs, and the way I see this world. I hope you enjoy it.

Once upon a time, there was a world full of orphans. Children of all ages wandered in search of something.

Some wanted to know how to grow up.

Others wanted to make good friends.

Others wanted to just have fun.

Others just wanted to have plenty of food, clothing, and a roof over their heads.

Still others wanted to have the best toys among everyone.

But, as any orphan might, many of them, deep down, truly wanted to find their parents.

In this world full of orphans, a stash of letters was discovered. The letters were addressed to the entire world, and the sender was known as, "Your Father Forever." Every letter ended that way:

"I love you all, and I will come for you one day, to take you home.

Your Father Forever."

The discovery of these letters made many orphans so excited. They made copies for everyone and read each letter for guidance on how to behave, what to do with their lives until their father returned, and how to see the world they lived in in the meantime.

But many others didn't think the letters were true. They figured one of the other orphans had forged the letters. A lot of orphans thought there just couldn't be a father out there. If there was, wouldn't they have seen him before? Wouldn't there be more proof?

Those who continued to read the letters found explanations for every question. One of the letters explained that someone had stolen the orphans from their father, lied to them about a better place, about wondrous toys and about how to grow up to be important, strong, and smart. But it was a lie. And the children had become orphans because of this lie, because they ran away from home. Since then, they couldn't remember whether they had a father or not.

As time progressed, the orphans made many choices in life. Even the orphans who believed the letters were real began to disagree among each other.

Some thought they should enforce good manners and rules on the others, to represent their father in his absence. But they had trouble agreeing on the rules and what the letters actually meant. A lot of them were so afraid that their father would be angry when he came back, learning the mistakes they had made.

Some thought there was no need to tell anyone else about the letters, as long as they knew their father was coming to get them.

Others thought they should tell everyone about the letters but got scared when they considered what others would say about the parts that were harder to understand. So they skipped those parts.

And still others believed they needed to share the letters with the world, tell anyone who asked what the letters said, and to just realize that every orphan they saw around them was their brother or sister, who deserved to be loved as one.

For, in his letters, the father explained,

"Love each other, for you are brothers and sisters.

Forgive each other after arguments and fights. And share what you learn from these letters, because this is the way I have been able to teach you in my absence. To teach you right from wrong. Good from bad. Truth from lie.

If you continue to read my letters, my dear sons and daughters, and remember that I love you and am coming for you, then there is nothing you need to be afraid of. As long as you are waiting for me when I come, I will be able to take you home."

One day, the father did come, and the children who were waiting for him would never spend another day fatherless.
