People often say life is like a boat adrift in the vast ocean. At times, the waves crash mercilessly, and finding a way out seems like an unattainable dream. For Mr. Hai, this wasn’t just a metaphor but the harsh reality of his life.
At 47, Mr. Hai once lived a life filled with pride and hope. A university graduate, he met Thanh during their youthful days in the lecture halls. They weathered countless storms together, building a modest but happy life. When their daughter, Thao Vy, was born, Hai thought his life was complete. He had established a company with his own sweat and tears, and his family was a beacon of joy in their small community. Neighbors admired him as a model of success and happiness.
But one mistake unraveled everything. Hai was deceived in a business deal that left him destitute. Years of hard work vanished overnight, and debts mounted relentlessly. Thanh, who had planned to pursue further education for her career advancement, met another man during her studies. This man, with his wealth and status, stood in stark contrast to Hai, who was drowning in failure. Their once-loving marriage soured, culminating in Thanh leaving him. She took the remaining assets and walked away, leaving Hai and Thao Vy in utter poverty.
Their new life began in a cramped, dimly lit rental room. Hai’s degree in finance and years of business experience meant nothing to potential employers unwilling to take a chance on a man nearing fifty. Day after day, he pounded the pavement, resumes in hand, only to face rejection at every turn.
Thao Vy, though just fifteen, understood her father’s struggles more deeply than she let on. Each morning, she went to school clutching a small bread roll for lunch. In the evenings, she quietly studied under the dim light, careful not to show her tears when her father glanced her way. She carried the burden of their shared hardships in silence, her young shoulders weighed down by a maturity far beyond her years.
There were nights when Hai sat outside their small room, staring up at the dark, starless sky. He often questioned what cruel twist of fate had brought him here. The thought of ending it all frequently crossed his mind, but every time he saw Thao Vy hunched over her schoolbooks, determination etched into her face, his resolve to keep going strengthened. “She’s already lost her mother. How could I abandon her too?” he would whisper to himself.
One particularly harsh winter evening, Hai found Thao Vy sitting at their rickety table, hands wrapped around a chipped cup of tea. She had stayed late at school for extra classes and walked home alone in the biting cold. Her cheeks were flushed, and her hands trembled slightly as she held the cup. “I’ll be okay, Dad,” she said, her voice soft but steady. “We’ll get through this together.”
Those words pierced his heart. How had he, a man who once held the world in his hands, come to rely on the strength of a child? Yet it was her unwavering belief in him that became his anchor.
Determined to find a way out, Hai enrolled in a vocational course, hoping to learn a trade that would secure stable work. The process was humbling; surrounded by younger peers, he often felt out of place. But he swallowed his pride, driven by the image of Thao Vy graduating high school and stepping into a brighter future.
One evening, as Hai struggled to complete a task for his course, Thao Vy joined him at the table. Together, they worked through the problem, her youthful energy blending seamlessly with his years of wisdom. It was a small moment, but it reminded Hai of the partnership they had formed—a father and daughter, leaning on each other to rebuild their lives.
Their journey was far from over, and the road ahead remained uncertain. Yet, in their tiny rented room, amidst the flickering shadows of hardship, there was also a light—the light of hope, resilience, and an unbreakable bond. For Hai, that light was enough to keep moving forward, one step at a time, with Thao Vy by his side.
