Growing up

By Jacob neavillePublished 7 months ago 3 min read

growing up in rural central Illinois I realized a few things ….

I knew exactly (cue pee wee Herman noise ) what I wanted to be when I grew up.

A radio talent and mancow muller was my inspiration. The dude was funny and irreverent and edgy.

I absolutely loved those things. I knew I could do those things.

I got hired on at 93.5 the rock and Q96 and lemme tell you those were the best days I’ve had in radio ….

In the next story I’ll detail some of those days and much more (I’m sure your just dying to hear them )

you want more ?

Well here we go….radio is a very fun and very cutthroat industry. Your selling advertisement and as a talent our competing for air time .

I lucked out and met Amy and Brian due to college internship and got my start as a stuntman on Q96.

The first stunt I did was bit of a quirky one, now it was during cinco de mayo and I’ll give you one guess on what the stunt may have been….any guess at all?

No? Not one ? Ok fair enough .

It was “sink full of mayo “!!

Creativity at its best lemme tell ya . I loved the idea but I wasn’t sure what I had to do. I was told that I would stick my head in a sink full of mayonnaise and pull props out with my teeth!

I love a goofy stunt and I was to the moon for the idea. The day comes for the stunt and I am told to mimic the sounds of my face in mayo…I do it and it sounds a little weird on the radio . I love it 👍. The show comes and goes and Amy pulls me aside and says “you actually have to do it or people will call bs” I said I understand and about 2 hours later I have pictures of myself covered in mayo …my degree at work lol.

After I got cleaned up I was made aware that mayo was good for your hair but smelled bad, how did I know it smelled bad ? I wasn’t allowed within 30 feet of any talent or staff lol. (It’s the worlds lamest restraining order)

I went home and took a long shower and lemme tell ya I had a ball. I was working in radio and having the time of my life .

The next fun stunt I did had jackass inspiration .

It was the wee hours of the morning and Brian and Amy asked if I loved jackass…of course I do . ❤️❤️❤️

The stunt in mind was tying a firework to one of my chest hairs and setting it off….best idea ever .

We pulled the stunt off and we ran away giggling like kids.

This is why I enjoy radio and entertainment and entertaining in general . I get pure joy from tomfoolery and I am happy if it entertains you as the audience .

Depending on reader response I may go into more stories and even share the day I got fired but only if your interested.

Radio is such a fun medium. You paint a picture with your voice and let the listeners imagine the story and what you may look like…you guys do that listening to the radio ? It’s fun isn’t it .

Getting up at 5am to listen to mancow and this show …simple times for sure.

Thank you for reading and more is to come for sure .

Radio sounds like a wild ride! Your mayo stunt is hilarious. I've had my share of crazy work experiences. It's all about having fun and being creative, even if it gets a bit messy.
