Well, my story begins at the age of three years old. That's when my mom and my aunt Esther Lee competed for sewing sundresses and slacks for us girls.
I used to love to sit and watch and hear the sound of their shears cutting and searing through the fabric.
My mom sewed for me and my five sisters and my aunt sewed for my cousins, her five girls. It was always such a competition at family affairs. People just whispered among themselves as to who had made the best dresses and slacks.
We once had a family fashion show and my mother made all jackets and slacks of animal skin. Everything from snakeskin to leopard skin and zebra skin. My aunt Esther Lee loved glitter and glitz. Oh, how lovely it was to hear the popping of the beads and the glittery shells as she too ran her scissors up and down her fabrics.
I think I was the only kid in my family that simply loves to sit from house to house watching them develop their fabulous outfits.
Then one day I decided to see what I could do with scissors so I begin to take old undershirts and cut them up to make clothes for our dolls. I even went on to use my scissors to cut up newspaper to design paper dresses using the colorful comic section of the newspaper. Oh, how I enjoyed my designs.
I knew then that I was going to become a fashion designer. Keeping in mind all the fabulous ideas my mother and my aunt Esther Lee gave me I knew it would not be a problem for me to be successful.
Before I went on to design I decided to model clothes simply loving the fabrics and the various cuts and designs simply made me very admirable of the entire industry. I knew all the hard work and the scissor art that took place. Which brought back fond memories.
Well, what I didn't know was I couldn't sew a lick! I was good at designing and cutting out the patterns. So after numerous attempts and with trial and error, I had to admit that I had not found my niche.
What I did find after that disappointing experience is I had
finally found my niche and it was anything that had to do with creative designing, cutting, and utilizing scissors. Although I enjoyed fabrics and sewing I thought I'd leave that to my mom and auntie. It would give me a constant reason to sit around and listen to them cut with their shears and sew.
What I started to do why use my scissors in a way that created other art forms. One would be utilizing mixed media such as cutting out cardboard faces and adorning them with eyelashes and fake hair and makeup to depict the Beautiful black women that I always adored. The other is utilizing paper plates cardboard felt and polymer clay. The other is desk toppers. I have been selling my creative art prices utilizing nothing more than scissors, paint brushes, and glue to various individuals throughout the country. I am so so happy for the experience that I had and the ability for me to know when I've been licked to only find a new and exciting creative way to utilize my magnificent scissors, to produce Divastuff Collections and Her Golden Scissors.
