Childhood Killers
A Second Thought On Phones
In todays modern world we are moving faster than ever before. With advancements in technology, our lives can change in the blink of an eye. We use things such as phones, computers, and smart watches like they have always been here. But the truth is, they haven't. And while many might argue that we are better off with technology, I disagree. Now you might be thinking I am just another sixty some year old who remembers "the good old days". But you could not be more wrong. I am a 19 year old who has lived his whole life inside the bubble of technology. I can tell you from a fresh perspective that we are worse off because of technology. We are not only hooked but dependent on technology and phones particularly. When was the last time you looked at your phone? Chances are your reading this on your phone right now! Almost everything we do, happens on our phone, and I fear we have forgotten what life was like before that.
I want you to remember a time before kids had their faces stuffed in the screens of today. What were they doing? You may be picturing the neighborhood boys outside, riding their bike down the road, oblivious to what's around them and simply having a good time. You possibly thought of the girls outside at the playground, pouring a cup of tea for each other and their dolls. Or maybe its the time when all the kids come together to sit under the stars and watch the fireworks from the town carnival. Do you remember such a time? Now think to what you see kids doing today, it surly isn't what I just described. They are inside, playing video games, watching television or scrolling on social media. While arguments can be made to say that these things have their benefits, the cons will always outweigh the pros.
I say this all because my childhood was killed by a phone. I want to make sure any perspective parent doesn't make the same mistake mine did. It might seem like a simple decision to give your child a phone. But it will have disastrous effects. I wish I had more time to enjoy the simple childhood pleasure like being out in nature, riding my bike, fishing, and all the other simplicities that I took for granted. Looking back, if I had the option to get a phone at 13 like I did, or waiting till 16, 17, or even 18 I would chose the ladder. Because childhood is short. Its only a fraction of your life and boy does it go by quickly. You have to make the most of the time you have, especially as a child. So parents, don't let today's society fool you. Your kid are better off waiting to get a phone. Let them enjoy their childhood innocents and be free from the evil phones will inevitably bring to their lives. They will fight you on this, and they may not like you for it. I was the same way before I got my phone. But looking back I realize I would have been better off without that pocket sized childhood killer. Further, I missed out on many opportunities and was overly anxious and even depressed because of the evil that was right in my pocket. Don't let the world rob your child of the life they deserve. Stand firm and protect your children, the future, from evil.
Let kids go out an experience the world, with their childhood still intact and their spirt free of evil. Why give them a screen, when theirs a whole world just waiting to be discovered.
