Billy loved baseball. He knew that this was going to be his year. He was going to get to play in the little league game. Billy had watched his friends play for the last couple of years while he sat and waited patiently on the bench. Billy loved to watch them all play. They didn’t win all their games, but they didn’t lose them all either. Billy would go home after the games and had dreams of playing in the game. He longed to be out there with his friends. He just hoped that coach would let him get out there this year.
The first couple of weeks, they would all show up at the park to play ball. Bobby was off to a great start. He hit some out of the park. On the other hand, Mike and Matt, had stolen some home runs by their great catches in the outfield. Tommy held his ground at home plate. He was very supportive of the players up for bat, but it was up to the batters to do their part. While all this was going on, Billy sat and waited patiently.
By mid-summer, Billy thought that he was going to get his chance to play when Brad couldn’t come to the game because his family went on vacation that week. Billy was so excited that he could hardly contain himself. He was finally going to get to play. They had a late afternoon game that day. The day started out with a few clouds in the sky, but as game time grew closer, the clouds were taking over the sky and making it darker gray in color. They all arrived at the park ready for a game. Before the coaches could turn in their lineup, the clouds opened up and let out a downpour. They ended up calling the game on the count of rain. Billy was so disappointed that he missed his chance.
Billy woke up on Saturday morning and had a feeling in his gut that something very special was going to happen. He hoped and prayed that it was concerning the ball game they were playing that afternoon. He couldn’t wait to get to the park. As he headed toward the dugout, he noticed that Coach Tracy had a sad look on his face. Billy wondered what the problem was.
Coach gathered the team around and said, “Team, I’ve got some bad news. It seems that last night one of our teammates, Brad, moved to another team.”
Bobby asked, “What are you going to do now?”
Coach replied, “Looks like Billy finally gets to play. What do you think about that, Billy?”
“Wow,” Billy replied, “I’ve been dreaming of this day for a long time!”
Billy’s friends congratulated him. He knew he deserved a chance to play. Coach told him to go and get warned up. This was going to be a good game and Coach needed Billy to be ready for it. The time had finally arrived. This was his big chance. He was going to make his dream come true.
Coach pulled the team together and started handing out their assignments. “Tommy Tee, you’re at home plate. Bobby Bat, you hit them out of the park. Mike and Matt Mitt get out there in the outfield and make sure no balls go outside the fence. Billy Ball, you’re on the tee. Let’s play ball!”
As Billy sat on the tee waiting for the first batter to swing, he couldn’t believe he was finally here. Pretty soon, he heard the crowd holler, “Swing!” The next minute he was air borne, heading high into the sky. He looked down and saw Mike and Matt in the outfield, but he knew they weren’t going to be able to catch him. He was headed out of the park. It was a beautiful view from that height. He could hear the crowd screaming in excitement as he neared the trees. He was out of there!
He couldn’t believe his first game had gone so well. He flew high and out of the park. Billy was sad that Brad wasn’t a part of the team anymore, but glad that it gave him the chance to fulfill his dream of playing baseball. He couldn’t wait for the next game.
