Betterment of Life..

A Look Inside The Passions Of My Heart

By Todd SimmonsPublished 5 years ago 3 min read
An Old Pic Of My Dad and Me circa 2011

What gets me going or what's my passion in life you ask?

Well it's an even split, something kind of boring and something kind of interesting I'll let you decide which is which. Also try to keep an open mind that's all I ask.

Growing up, my father, well I should say my late father is a Vietnam war combat veteran. He was also a drill sergeant as well, someone that deserves every respect this world can give him.

I'll never forget the story my father explained to me about coming home from Vietnam and because of mixed messaging from the White House, soldiers (some) were spat at. These are men that went to war, some against their will, remember the draft? Yes, dear children there was a time where your name was called you went to war or you went to jail.

But also 18 months in combat took its toll on my father's mind and body. When I was born in 1984, my father was still struggling with how to deal with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, in combination with Bipolar Disorder. Only one problem, the best medicine at that time to cure these horrible illnesses was lithium. My father was deadly allergic to.it. For the rest of his life he had to do a balancing act with up to 6 different medications to manage both diseases.

My father, bless his heart he saw the horrible conditions that veterans were still struggling with, and he was very instrumental in advocacy groups to help fellow veterans and there families. I will never forget Thanksgiving 1993, my father dragged me along to help him box food and deliver meals to veterans for the holidays. This one woman I'll never forget she was so thankful that it was like i was delivering food with superman. My god, I'm in tears writing this because it was a moment in time at 7 years old I decided that I wanted to help people just like my father.

But my father as he got older and sicker, the fight for medical care got harder and he showed me that you have to advocate and be part of improvements that will take care of our soldiers. I also saw first hand how the effect was damaging my parents marriage and alot of other things that a child should never have to see. My mother god rest her soul, at one point I saw a woman literally with no hope or no faith. But they, or I should saw we struggled through together because that's all we had, our little family.

Veterans, let's just use the USA as the main example, they fight wars, defend this country from enemies foreign and domestic, we owe it to our service members that in retirement you should be guaranteed housing, healthcare for you and your children, and college benefits. I would sleep better at night knowing there's no more homeless veterans. I'd gladly pay a tax increase if it meant that these freedom fighters would be guaranteed total peace of mind and a proper retired life. Think about it they fight in situations some of us wouldn't go near. I truly believe this is a fair trade.

Now on to a lighter version of the story my second passion is music. I really think this is missing from the modern era. But if you.want to sing, you sing, go have fun at karaoke. If you have money to spend to play or even make music even better! Todays kids I mean I have nothing against Taylor Swift and I have 2 songs of hers in my playlist, but today I can name maybe 4 big talents in music. Is that all the music industry can produce now? My generation we had dozens! Music is the window of my soul. And it's also something I can't live without. So jam to your music I insist! Bring back creativity!
