Ainy’s Lesson — A Mother’s Silent Sacrifice

BY: Ubaid

Ainy Batool was an intelligent girl. She always performed well in school, topping her class and earning praise from her teachers. Everyone said she was bright and full of potential. But there was one thing that Ainy never cared much about — housework.

Her mother often tried to make her understand.
“Ainy, you’re growing up now. You should help me a little around the house.”
But Ainy would brush it off every time.
“Ammi, I’ll do it later,” she would say lazily, eyes still fixed on her phone screen.

Her mother would smile tiredly and continue her chores — cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing, and looking after Ainy’s younger brother and sister. The whole day she would stay busy, and by night, she would be completely exhausted. But still, she never complained.

Ainy, on the other hand, lived a carefree life. Her daily routine was simple: come home from school, eat lunch, sleep for hours, wake up in the evening to do her homework, and then spend the rest of the night watching TV, playing games, or chatting with friends on her phone. She never once thought about how much her mother did or how tired she might be.

Whenever her mother gently reminded her to help, Ainy would frown.
“Ammi, I have homework.”
“Ammi, I’m tired.”
Or sometimes, she would just pretend not to hear.

Days turned into months, and Ainy’s attitude stayed the same. Her mother kept hoping that someday her daughter would understand — but she never forced her.

Then, one day, everything changed.

It was the year when the world suddenly came to a stop — the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools were closed, and everyone had to stay home. The house that once became quiet when Ainy and her siblings went to school was now full of noise all day long. And with everyone at home, the workload increased tremendously.

“Ammi, can you make pancakes today?”
“Ammi, I’m hungry again.”
“Ammi, where’s my shirt?”

Requests kept coming nonstop. And to make things worse, the housemaid, who usually came to help, had to take leave because of lockdown restrictions. Now all the cleaning, cooking, and washing fell entirely on Ainy’s mother’s shoulders.

She worked from early morning till late at night — without rest, without complaint. But her body could only take so much. One evening, Ainy noticed her mother sitting quietly in the kitchen, holding her head. She looked pale and tired.

“Ammi, are you okay?” Ainy asked.

Her mother smiled faintly. “Just a little tired, beta. I’ll be fine.”

But the next day, she couldn’t even get out of bed. The doctor said she was exhausted and needed complete rest. For the first time, Ainy felt fear. The house suddenly seemed strange without her mother moving around, calling out instructions, or humming softly while cooking.

That day, for the first time, Ainy entered the kitchen not to eat, but to work.

The dishes were piled up. The floor was messy. The clothes needed washing. The little ones were fighting in the living room. Everything was out of order. She stood still for a moment, overwhelmed.

“Is this what Ammi does every day?” she whispered to herself.

With determination, Ainy rolled up her sleeves and began cleaning. The water was too hot, the dishes slippery, and the broom heavier than she expected. Her back hurt after an hour, her hands became sore, and her hair stuck to her face with sweat. By the time she finished cooking a simple meal, she was so tired she could barely stand.

That night, when she brought dinner to her mother’s room, she said softly, “Ammi, I didn’t know it was so hard. You work so much every single day, and I never even noticed.”

Her mother smiled weakly. “Now you know, my child. A mother’s work never ends. But when her children understand her, her tiredness disappears.”

Tears filled Ainy’s eyes. “From now on, I’ll always help you. I promise.”

And she kept her promise.

As the days passed, Ainy started waking up early to make breakfast, helping her siblings with their studies, and cleaning the house. She learned how to cook, wash, and even manage the younger ones when her mother needed rest. Slowly, the home began to feel peaceful again.

When her mother recovered, she was surprised to see how much Ainy had changed. Her once carefree daughter had become responsible and caring.

“My sweet girl,” she said, kissing Ainy’s forehead, “you’ve grown up.”

Ainy smiled. “I just learned how hard you work, Ammi. You never complained, even when you were tired. I was wrong not to help.”

Her mother hugged her tightly, tears shining in her eyes.

That evening, Ainy gathered her younger brother and sister and said, “We all need to take care of Ammi. She does everything for us, and we should help her too.” The younger ones nodded eagerly, and together, they began sharing small chores.

From that day onward, the house became filled with laughter, teamwork, and love.

And Ainy never forgot the lesson life had taught her — a mother’s love is silent, endless, and selfless. Her sacrifices may go unnoticed, but her prayers have the power to change destinies.

So, dear readers, never ignore your mother’s hard work. Help her, respect her, and cherish her. Because truly, there is nothing more precious in this world than a mother’s prayer.
