A Biracial Girl From an Interracial Couple

Meah’s Story

By Aryanna WattersPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Hi! I’m Meah. I live with my parents on our farm full of animals.

These are my friends: Sono, Evie, Zahra, Julian, Giovanni, and Kasamba. We are showing each other pictures of our families.

After recess today, we have Share Time. This is where we show pictures of our families with our class.

Evie asks, “Meah, why do you look like your dad but you and your mom look different?”

“What do you mean?” said Meah.

*ring…..

“Let’s go! Recess is over.” said Zahra.

“Alright students. Everyone get out your family photos and join me at the rug for Share Time.” said Mr. Meyer.

As I watched everyone show their family that looked just like them, I realized that my mom and I do not look anything alike.

“My parents and I have the same eye color and hair color,” said Sono.

“My dad and I look exactly alike,” exclaimed Kasamba.

“I am adopted, but a lot of people think I look like my adoptive parents,” Evie said with a smile.

That makes me feel super embarrassed and sad. “Mr. Meyer, I forgot my family photo.” said Meah shyly. Mr. Meyer said, “That is okay. You can bring your family photo tomorrow.”

For the rest of the day, I felt sad.

“How did your Share Time go today, Meah” asked Mom. “Mom, why do we look different from each other?” asked Meah boldly. “What do you mean?” asked Mom.

“All my friends at school look exactly like their parents or if they look different, they were adopted. I am the only kid who was not adopted and does not look like both my parents.” exclaimed Meah.

“Meah, do you see that daddy and I look different? And that our hair and eye color are different?”

“Yes, mom. I know you and daddy look different, but I look like daddy. I don’t look like you.”

Mom said, “That is because your daddy has darker skin and mommy has lighter skin. Daddy has curly hair and I have straight hair. My eyes are blue and daddy’s eyes are dark brown. You are a mixture of daddy and me. Other kids look more like their parents, because their parents have similar features. Your skin is a mixture between daddy and my skin. Your eyes are dark brown like daddy’s and your hair is curly like daddy’s hair. However, you have my smile and my ears.”

“I do have your smile and ears,” said Meah excitedly. “See Meah. You don’t have to look exactly like daddy or exactly like me in order for other people to know that you are our baby” said mom gently. “People know because we share the same soul and love.”

I cannot wait to get to school tomorrow and show my photos at Share Time.

The next morning, I raced to school and asked Mr. Meyer if we could have Share Time first and he agreed. I am so excited to show everyone my family.

Meah explained to the class, “This is my daddy and my mom. My mom and daddy look very different from each other, but that just makes me a bigger mixture. There’s some things I have from my mom and some things I have from my daddy. I have my daddy’s hair and eyes. I have my mom’s smile and ears. And my skin is a mixture between my daddy and my mom. People may not know they are my parents when they first see us, but when they get closer they see the two things that I got from my mom and my daddy, love and my soul.”
