6 Signs That You’re an Introverted Mom

Did you discover that you’re secretly an Introverted Mom?

Being a mom is definitely a social activity. Not only are you being talked to by your kids all day, but there are also playdates, doctor appointments, school days, activities, outings, family gatherings, birthday parties…the list goes on.

Many moms fool themselves into believing that they are extroverts because they are so good at all of the social activities.

But as Sophia Dembling, author of “The Introvert’s Way”, tells us in her book – the thought that only extroverts handle social situations well is just a myth.

Here are some signs that you may really be an introverted mom.

1. You don’t answer your phone

It rings and you glace at the the name of the caller. It’s your bestie, probably wanting to set up a playdate with the kids. Although you want to speak with her, you let it go to voicemail. You like communicating with people on your terms, and spontaneous calls are not it. You call back a minute later, when you feel totally prepared for a good conversation.

2. You need a buddy

You really want to go to that La Leche League meeting/school open house/baby product expo, but if you can’t find a friend to go with, forget it. You prefer to know at least one person who will be in the group. If you really think about it, you want to go to those events for the subject matter, not to meet tons of new people. And even if you take a buddy with you, you may still find yourself ducking into the restroom every so often just for a breather from all the socialization.

3. You recharge with alone time

When you have a kid-free afternoon, are you more likely to spend the day at home with a good book, out shopping alone, or on a jog through the park? All of these activities give introverts some “alone time” that will allow them to feel reinvigorated.

4. You feel awkward with small talk

When you take your kids to the park, you don’t shy away from other moms. You don’t mind chatting, although you may feel a bit awkward with small talk. But if they get you to talking about a topic you find interesting (mommy myths, perhaps?), watch out! You may never shut up.

5. You have nightmares about audience participation

When you see the Seven Dwarves running through the audience to find their “Snow White” during a children’s theatre show you’re attending with your little ones, you avert your eyes, hoping to signal that you do NOT, under any circumstances, want to go up on stage. Or even have the spotlight on you. And keep that microphone away. Just thinking about it gets you in a cold sweat. Is Dopey looking at you and coming closer? Avert eyes. Avert eyes!

6. You have a busy brain

After a day full of playdates and doctor’s appointments, you probably feel like your head will explode. Brain scans of introverts show that they have very busy brains, particularly in the frontal lobe, even when not too much is going on. So add in a full day without a few minutes of “me” time scattered throughout, and you’ll feel overwhelmed and exhausted.

Did you discover that you’re secretly an Introverted Mom? If so, join the club! A staggering 51% of the population is estimated to be introverted. So embrace your introverted mom awesomeness and keep in mind that having “mommy time” for yourself isn’t just a luxury – it’s a necessity!
